Statement of Significance

House, 278 High Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from 1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 278 High Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are red face brick. The roof is hipped with a small half gable at the top and clad with tiles. There is a red brick chimney evident. The verandah is under a continuous tiled roof supported by masonry columns above a brick half wall balustrade with decorative face brick patterns. The verandah is enclosed by timber latticework, and this, as well as vegetation in the front yard prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St. The land on which house 278 High Street stands was vacant in 1906/07 and owned by Catherine Grant. By 1910/11 stables and a cottage had been built on the land which was still owned by Grant and occupied by Walter Grant. Walter Grant was the owner/occupier of the house in 1927/28. In the 1940s the house was owned by Maud Catherine Saunders who had several tenants. The house was originally number 526 and was Lot 1075.

Integrity/Authenticity

High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
