STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE gazetted with permanent entry as State Registered Place (20/04/2007). Victoria Square Cottages Group, a row of four single-storey brick and iron cottages designed in a simple interpretation of the Victorian Georgian style, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: + the place, which forms a significant streetscape, is part of the suburban residential development associated with the expansion of Perth at the turn of the twentieth century, and is rare as a relatively intact example of a nineteenth century group of cottages; + the place is rare in Western Australia as an example of row housing, unified by the repetition of decorative treatment to front elevations across the group, although the dwellings were constructed as individual structures and are individually good examples of simple workers’ cottages; + the place, which has been owned by the Roman Catholic Church since 1906 and used from the early 1970s by various of its social welfare and religious service organisations, contributes to a precinct of nineteenth century structures associated with the Roman Catholic Church around Victoria Square; and, + the place is valued by those who have used and benefited from the provision of social welfare and religious services operating from the cottages since the 1970s. The cottage at 21 Victoria Square is not included within the curtilage for this place. It is documented in ‘Victoria Square Cottages, Perth, Conservation Plan’ (Naomi Lawrance: 2003) and has less significance than the other four cottages.
Row of detached single storey houses with medium pitched hipped roofs and front gables, verandahs have separate roof and timber posts, facade with quoining, pointed arch vent and finial, some door and window openings altered.
Houses associated with the history of Victoria Square.
Medium level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as it is largely intact with some alterations to door and window openings.
