History

Solomon Street was originally known as Mary Street, gazetted in 1905. It changed its name in 1951/52 to honour Elias Solomon, a Fremantle merchant and politician who built a house and lived in this street. Solomon was a Town Councillor 1878-1880, 1883-1886, Mayor in 1889-1891, 1896-98 and 1900-01. He was a state parliamentarian, MLA for the seat of South Fremantle 1892-1901, then transferred to Federal Politics with a seat in the House of Representatives from 1901-1903. Solomon was the first Member for Fremantle in the Federal Government. The 1908 PWD Map shows the area at that time and how undeveloped the surrounding lots are. Fremantle City Council ratebooks revealed that in 1925-1926 lot 1 of 825 was a vacant lot. In 1927-1928 a residence appears owned and occupied by Joseph Creeper. Joseph Creeper was owner/occupier until 1940-1941 when Ethel Wade became owner. In 1935-1936 the number of the residence changed from number 236 to its present number 128. In 1951-1952 Michele and Anna Corbo are listed and were owners until at least 1985 when Michele died. In 1988 there are a number of owners listed, Maria, Michael and Nicola Corbo, Serefina Follington and Anna Spezzacatena. In November 1989 Sitarem Vij was recorded as owner and in 1995, Dennis and Catherina Cherry were the owners. In November, 1988 Mr S Vij had applied for approval to use the existing residence as a professional office and also to build a single or two storied dwelling, to the rear of the existing dwelling. This application was refused. In 1989 Wayne Jacks also applied for approval to construct two storey additions to the rear of the Lot. Planning consent was granted subject to some conditions. The application form No. 6167 was for a limestone/iron new residence at an estimated cost of $100,000. Application was made and approval was granted for alterations of a rear single storey addition, plus a carport on the side in 1993. These were to cost an estimated $25,000 and were for Mr Dennis Cherry (Plan No. 7623).
