Statement of Significance

House, 58 Solomon Street, is a single storey limestone and tile house dating from 1914. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 58 Solomon Street is a single storey limestone and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are limestone with rendered quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The verandah is under a separate tiled roof supported by pairs of steel decorative poles (not original). The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room with a modern roller shutter covering the window. The facade under the verandah roof has a door with side light, and another window, also with a modern roller shutter. The house is situated above street level with steps leading up to the verandah, and a wrought iron balustrade (not original). There is a low rendered wall to the front boundary line.

History

Solomon Street was originally known as Mary Street. It changed its name in 1951/52 to honour Elias Solomon, a former mayor and MLA. Lot 2 of 791 in 1914/15 was owned by John Wesley Bateman, Harry James W Higham and Fred Hollis and occupied by Owen William Hough. By 1919/20 the property was owned by Eva Agnes Hough and occupied by Owen William Hough. Then by 1929/30 Owen William Hough is the owner/occupier.
