Statement of Significance

The formers Cook's House is significant as it represents a time of growth in Katanning when people were moving into the town, there was a housing shortage and rental prices escalated. By moving his house from Kalgoorlie to Katanning, Cook was able to afford to live in Katanning. It therefore has high social and historic significance.

Physical Description

This residence is a one-storey weatherboard structure with a corrugated iron roof. It was originally erected in Kalgoorlie by Mark Cook, then moved to and re-erected in Katanning when Cook transferred there. Original timber posts on the northwest side support the bullnose verandah. A concrete floor has replaced the verandah area. The half gables at the verandah ends are clad in scalloped boards. Original sash windows on northwest side also. A Katanning brick chimney on the southwest is believed to have been, built by the Art & Crafit Society in 1973. The society also carried out other alterations. The garden is simply grassed with boarder beds of conifers, roses, prunus and the like.

History

Mark Cook, a railway worker from Kalgoorlie moved to Katanning around 1922-23, bringing with him his weatherboard and iron home as rental prices were quite high in Katanning at this time of growth. By 1929, Cook had moved out of Broome Street and by 1935 Cook had become Assistant Station Manager.
