Statement of Significance

This single storeyed stone residence, in the Queen Annestyle, has cultural significance because: it has historical, aesthetic and social significance; it is representative of the early phase of developmentin the suburb and of the new set of business people who came into Peppermint Grove in the 1950's; it is comparatively intact; it has restrained verandahs facing both front and side gardens which make the place a comparatively rare exampleof its style; it forms part of a group of culturally significant places in Forrest Street and is within an area of townscape value. The house is a comparatively intact and restrained example of the Federation Queen Anne style, with its limestone walling, muted colour scheme and emphasis on the encircling quiet timber verandah. The house, particularly the verandahs, was designed to view and link both front and side gardens This site reflects the social development of the suburb. Some social significance. History

Part of a group of residences in Forrest Street built close to the turn of the twentieth century. The original and subsequent owner were women. Lily Whitaker, the second owner, was possibly sister to architect L B Whitaker. In the early 1950's G F Gill purchased the property and was one of a group of Peppermint Grove residences owned inthe 1950's by a new set of successful businessmen. Some historical significance.
