Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as a fine example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical attached pair of cottages dating from the early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

Single storey tuck pointed stone and tuck pointed brick quoining and a zincalume hipped roof duplex. There is rendered dividing wall and a bull nosed verandah supported by timber collared posts. No 8 has two brick chimneys with corbelling and additions at the rear. There are timber double hung sash windows and timber paneled doors and sidelights and fanlights. Duplex 2-4 and 6-8 Agnes Street are similar in style and form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of Agnes Street.

History

Agnes St was gazetted in 1906. The original lot number was 6 of 36.Two cottages, nos. 6 and 8 Agnes St were built on Lot 6 by W. H Jones in 1901/02. They were constructed of limestone with brick quoins, timber rear sections which incorporated bathrooms. Both cottages were sewered in July 1913. The original houses were numbered 26 & 28, and changed to 6 & 8 in 1935/36. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance.
