Statement of Significance

Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical single storey stone cottage dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area. Has undergone significant alterations but original form remains intact.

Physical Description

House, 121 Solomon Street is a single storey limestone and corrugated asbestos house built in the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are limestone and tuck pointed brick. The roof is hipped and clad in corrugated asbestos. There is a rendered and brick chimney with corbelling. The south side of the façade has a pointed brick faceted bay. The dropped verandah is supported by V shaped metal poles which are not original. There is a limestone and steel picket fence to the front boundary line, with steel gates. The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of Solomon Street; 121, 123, 125, 127, 134, 135, 139, 143, 147, 148,149, 150, 151, 153, 156, 157, 159, 161, 162 & 168.

History

Lot 11 (of 31/32 ) of 7 has a cottage listed in 1900. The owner was Mrs S. McCall. The occupant was John Morrison.
