The house at 68 Avon Street has both architectural and historic value. It has a distinctive design and is characterised by the rough stucco wall with contrasting brick quoin and herring bone work. It also represents a growing awareness of the people of Katanning to their design of houses, making them landmarks within the streetscape.
This is a single storey brick residence with a corrugated iron roof. The exterior walls have been decorated by rough stucco (lm above ground) with contrasting brick quoin work. The verandah is carried on twin posts with decorative brackets set over conglomerate stone piers. The verandah area has tile and concrete base (not original) and iron roof. The southeast side still has original timber posts. The main entry door has side and fan lights. Each room still has the original fireplaces and jarrah mantle piece. The kitchen has been modified and an extension added to the rear of the house in 1974 of a dining room and study and one bedroom. Picture railing, wide skirting and doors remain intact. A timber frame, steel roof patio was in added in April 1998.
This residence was built for Harold and Ethel Pearce in cl929. Harold worked in the first private hospital "Kerak" and married Ethel in 1923. After living for six years in hospital quarters the Pearce's moved to Avon Street and lived there until 1959.
