Statement of Significance

House, 298 High Street, is a single storey limestone and tile house dating from 1916. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 298 High Street is a single storey brick, limestone and tile house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are limestone to dado height and red face brick above. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with tiles. There is a red brick corbelled chimney evident. The gable has a timber and render feature. The verandah is under a separate tiled roof supported by steel poles. The symmetrical front façade has a central door with side fanlights and two timber framed double hung sash windows either side, covered by security screens. There are rendered window sills.

History

As was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St. This Workers Home Board house was occupied by Michael Herbert Smith in 1916/17. Smith was still living there in 1921/22 and by 1934/35 Frederick Charles Dart was the tenant. By 1941/42 Rose Sumner Dart was the owner/occupier. The house was originally number 580 and is Lot 1580.
