Statement of Significance

Remaining kilns of high significance due to length of operation and knowledge of the site.

Physical Description

Kilns 7 and 11 are no longer extant. Kiln 7 was destroyed during a bush fire in early 2001. When inspected in November 2002 it was noted that only kilns 8, 9 and 10 are extant. The remaining kilns, of single type and 'D' in shape, are partially collapsed with vegetation growing through the structure. Kilns 8 and 10 are three arch and in better condition than the other one.

History

Balcatta Lime Stone Company originally operated these five kilns, probably during the period late 1920s to 1965. The Company is recorded as supplying 100 tons of ground quicklime in 1928 and 1929. The adjacent quarry also supplied limestone to the Wanneroo Roads Board for road works. This site, with kilns and quarry, was possibly the largest such operation in the district. Oral history notes the place as a common distribution point for bagged lime.
