Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a way of life, and an evolution over time. It represents the value of a town hall.

Physical Description

The 1934 section is central within the existing building. It is red face brick construction with a gabled corrugated iron roof. An extension at the rear is the same shape and form but constructed with dark brown face bricks. The front section is a flat roofed construction of brown face bricks and a front facade balanced by five vertical format windows. An entry porch with a flat roof and slender steel columns, is located on the north side of the building.

History

The original Kondinin Hall was located in Rankin Street on the lot behind the Garden of Memory. It was built in 1917 (see Ref No. 114 ), and was the Mecca of the district. As the district developed, by 1927, a meeting was held to discuss the future of the hall, and the Roads Board offered to construct a hall. The architect was asked to prepare plans for a new hall. However, with a downturn in wheat prices, and the beginning of the depression, a referendum rejected the loan in 1928. A public meeting of 100 people in 1929, overturned that decision by 2 votes. £4000 was budgeted for the hall, and £2000 for the Roads Board Offices. The architect's (Jeffries) plan prepared by December 1929, came in over budget. The Roads Board discussed the plans with Horsfall and Coote, a reinforced concrete expert and the architect of the Kojonup Hall, respectively. Negotiations took place with EB Johnson, for the Jones Street land which was the former proposed State Hotel site. The loan raised in 1933, was less than the original budgeted figure in 1928. The former hall supplied the timber materials for the construction of the stage and kitchen. The hall was constructed in brick and concrete with neo classical pillars. The hall opened on 1 September 1934, in the middle of the Great Depression. The Kondinin Hall is the social and civic centre of the Kondinin community. In c1960, the Roads Board offices at the front of the hall were demolished, and a new foyer, kitchen facility and lesser hall were constructed in its place.
