House, 1 Rose Street, is a single storey brick and iron house constructed as a variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. There are two rendered corbelled chimneys evident. The verandah is under a continuous corrugated iron roof. The front façade has been altered with a timber pergola/carport, and non-original windows, however the orignal central timber door with top and sidelights remains. The house is situated at street level. There is a timber picket fence to the front boundary line, and a steel gate at the driveway.
This area of South Fremantle was part of a five acre grant made to Captain John Bruce of the Pensioner Guards in 1851. The property was subdivided in the early 1890s although the majority of the street was not developed until the early 1900s. Sewerage Diagram no.82 1907 shows two galvanized iron boatsheds on the lot. In 1927/28 ownership passed from a James John Mews to a Reginald Ganstone Mews. The rate books show that a residence and boatshed now exist on the lot. At this time the street number was 31. The house is Lot 78 of 4.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
