In 1960 prospectors M Latoc and G Halberts of Esperance found white magnesite L5 mnes cum ui Ravensthorpe at Bandalup Creek close to Highway No. I. It was said to be the world's purest deposit. Basic Minerals Pty Ltd mined the magnesite and large quantities were taken by road to ship out through Esperance Port. Magnesite is used in the manufacture of refractory bricks, cements and flooring and as a magnesium metal in medicines.
