Statement of Significance

House, 10 Grey Street, is a typical limestone, brick and iron single storey house dating from c1911. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

10 Grey Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron with a gable over the front door. The facade has a central front door with fanlight flanked either side with timber framed casement windows. The verandah has a continuous corrugated iron roof with gable above front door, and is supported by timber posts. There is a timber picket fence to the front boundary line.

History

Rates Book Information: This house was formerly 32 Grey Street, renumbering occurred in 1935/36. This house is first recorded in the Post Office Directories in 1911 when it was occupied by William McKay. It has not been established if he was the owner of the property when it was built. He occupied the house until 1914. Further research of certificates of title and rates books for the period would help to establish the date of construction and the original owner of the property. Later occupants were Joseph Sanderson, Mrs E. Mercer and Mrs A. E. McKay between 1930 and 1940. This last occupant may have had some familial relationship with the original occupant.

Integrity/Authenticity

High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). High degree of authenticity with much original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).

Condition

Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
