Physical Description

Duplex 19-21 Holland Street. Single storey rendered and terracotta tile (probably not original) hipped roof duplex. There is a dividing firewall with decorative stucco and rendered columns onto a low wall balustrade which are also not original. Number 19 has been restored and the render removed to expose the limestone and brick quoining. The verandah is supported on timber posts with decorative brackets, cladding of tiling remains.

History

Fremantle Lot pt 1004 is recorded as a vacant lot in 1898. By 1899 two cottages are listed. The owner was C.L. Clifton. The occupant of one was a Customs worker. The occupant of the other was a Clerk. The post office directories list then occupants’ names as Harry A Hill (No. 19) and George Wilkins (No 21). Occupancy changed often for both places, suggesting they were rental properties. A 1913 plan (PWD 13017) and the 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2033) shows the attached pair, with full length front verandahs and a small central rear verandah with steps leading down to the back yard. Each house had a galvanised iron outbuilding on its western boundary fence. The houses were originally No. 32-34, and became 19-21 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937. Aerial photos show that between 1953 and 1965 the duplex was reroofed in tile.
