Statement of Significance

The place is of historic significance as an example of a commercial building in the Old Port City of Fremantle dating from the gold boom period in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Fine example in the Federation Free Classical style. Social significance as part of the Notre Dame University campus.The place is of social significance as evidenced by its classification by the National Trust.

Physical Description

Two storey rendered building with engaged ashlar effect pilasters and a zero setback from the pavement. There is a decorative parapet with balustrade and bracketed cornice. The ground floor has stucco architraves over arched windows and a central drive through entrance, an attached single storey gateway entrance is on the south side. The first floor has decorative stucco skirts and architraves to the sash windows.

History

The rates records of 1890 show a new building listed as the property of William Sandover on lots 33, 34, & 35 and iron store rooms on lot 36. 21-23 Mouat St was a brick and iron warehouse building demolished in c1992 for Notre Dame Courtyard.
