History

Fremantle Rate Book records show that Lot 4 of 989 was a vacant lot in 1902/3. By 1904/5 a cottage is recorded. The owner/occupier was James Anderson. The next occupant was Frederick Prowse (c1910-15). A long-term resident was Joseph William Dunkerton (c1925-45). The house was allocated No. 41 in 1905, and became number 26 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937. A 1913 plan (PWD 13017) and the 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2033) show that it was a long and narrow stone house with a full length front verandah and a shorter verandah at the back of the house running half way along the east side. The back of the house had an iron room attached. There was a timber outbuilding on the east boundary fence, and a larger one on the rear boundary in the east corner. Nos 18, 20 & 26 are similar in design and materials and were built by the same builder (information provided by owner of No. 18, February 2003).
