The Police Station and Courthouse are not the original buildings, but are in the same location as the original buildings and therefore represent the continued use of this part of town as the location for those places of law and order.
The Police Station is built of light coloured brick which is rendered with a Colourbond roof in the Western Australian 1970s regional style.
In 1891, the first Police Quarters were erected in Katanning. [Refer A2998 MI 1996] In 1891, the police station was built next to the quarters, also designed by George Temple Poole, which incorporated cells. A courthouse was built next to the station building. In 1960 work commenced on a new courthouse and offices on the other side of Clive Street, opposite the former courthouse, which was incorporated into the police station and served as the constables recreation room. The successful contractor for the new courthouse was R. J. Davies for a cost of £23 420. The site was cleared by local bulldozing contractor, G. M. Doak.
