26090 Holland/Forrest Street Heritage Area
House, 70 Forrest Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped and gabled and corrugated iron clad. The return verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof. The verandah is supported by timber posts with decorative timber brackets. The asymmetrical front façade has a timber framed corrugated iron roofed awning over three timber casement windows and a timber double hung window under the verandah. The place has a painted timber picket front boundary fence and gate.
The house was first listed in Post Office Directories in 1905 with Hugh Dawson as resident. It is difficult to track earlier occupants as numbers were allocated in that year, at which time the house was No. 149. It became number 70 when the whole street was renumbered in 1939. The 1914 sewerage map (No. 2118) shows an asymmetrical weatherboard house with a half-length front verandah on the east side. To the rear on the west is an attached bathroom, wash house and toilet. There is a cement area to the east and rear (possibly verandah space). A long term resident at No. 70 was Charles Chambers (c1915-1925) followed by John Henry Craig (c1925-35). A black and white photo dated c1991 shows a weatherboard house with one room set forward and a three-paned window in the front wall with a corrugated iron canopy (small corrugations, possibly mini-orb) and an early canopy on a window on the west wall. The corrugated iron roof has a ridge running parallel to the front wall, with a hip, and a verandah roof below the level of the main roof line, also with a hip. The verandah continues around the east side of the house and is enclosed with fibro sheeting. Aerial photos show that between 1985 and 1995 the rear of the lot was subdivided and another house built.
