House, 5 Burt Street is a good example of a stone residence in the Federation Queen Anne style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
House, 5 Burt Street is a single storey stone house with tuck pointed brick quoining to the corners, window and door openings. There are two faceted bays, and a zincalume hipped roof with two brick and rendered chimneys. This place contains a limestone feature.
Burt Street is likely named after Chief Justice Sir Archibald Paull Burt, who came to Fremantle in 1861 from the West Indies. His son, Septimus Burt, became the first Attorney-General under Responsible Government. House, 5 Burt Street was built in 1892-93 and owned by John and Hannah Boyle, who also owned the adjoining semi-detached cottages (7-9 Burt Street).
