Statement of Significance

House, 4 Stirling Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from 1924. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 4 Stirling Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick to the front, and painted brick at the rear of the sides. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with tiles, and has terracotta finials and two chimneys, and exposed rafters. The verandah is under a continuous tiled roof supported by timber posts on rendered pillars. The asymmetrical front façade has a porch verandah with timber framed doors. There is an enclosed room off the porch. The house is situated above street level with concrete steps leading up to the porch. There is a brick and timber picket fence to the front boundary line. Vegetation in the front yard prevents further description.

History

Constructed in 1924-25, as a residence for Richard Rennie, House 4 Stirling Street is a brick and stone bungalow, costing £1000 to erect. Rennie himself was the contractor. He served on the council and Tramways & Electric Lighting Board, and has a detailed obituary in the West Australian (21 November 1936).
