Statement of Significance

This single storey brick and terra cotta tiled residence, in the Federation Queen Anne style, is culturally significant because: - it is representative of the style and standard of the better classes of bungalows in the district; - it is a fine example of its style and period; - it has associations with C Gordon Piper, a well known merchant and customs agent, and Sir Ragnar Garrett, a Chief of Staff in the Australian defence forces; - it is part of a cultural group and is located within a townscape area. The house is a Federation Queen Anne style bungalow with an asymmetrical balance between the projecting bay and the front verandah. The house has a high degree of integrity in presenting the characteristics of its style. The place is located within an area having other places of comparable style, period and standard. The place is a relatively intact example of a Federation Queen Anne style of bungalow. The place is part of a group reflecting the social and economic developmentof the suburb, which has some social significance. Physical Description

Original timber verandah with lattice balustrade. arched bressemers & infill panels betweenpaired turned columns. Low brick fence separating garden from the street Set in a precinct of Federation period houses.

History

C Gordon Piper of Fremantle firm Grieve & Piper was one of a group of merchant families who built their homes in this part of Forrest Street in the early twentieth century. The Piper family occupied 125 Forrest Street until just before the outbreak of World War II. Sir Ragnar Garrett, a Chief of Staff, also owned and occupied 125 Forrest Street. The place represents a family residence typical of its economic group in early 1900s and is of some historical significance.
