Physical Description

Large stone building was intended to have the character of an English Inn with what was considered at the time to be sumptuous accommodation. The exterior of Yanchep Inn is enhanced by the use of Old English style treatment of decorative timber barge boarding on the gable end on the front elevation. The building is long and rectangular in shape, with a hipped roof which is covered with tiles. The building has wide, overhanging eaves that protect a balcony which stretches across each elevation. The feature of the exterior is a central section which forms the entrance on the ground floor level of the front elevation. This section projects beyond the main building and is covered by a gable roof, supported by paired timber posts sitting on heavy roughcast limestone piers. The walls are limestone and leadlight windows and internal timber panelling are features of the building. With the other three stone buildings on the site, Yanchep Inn completes a homogeneous setting of some rarity. The ground floor walls at the front are stone but later additions at the rear and upstairs are timber framed. Timber panelling and leadlight doors and windows are features of the public room downstairs.

History

During World War II the RAAF had a radar squadron at Yanchep and also used Yanchep Inn and Gloucester Lodge for the No 4 Convalescent Unit and the No 4 Medical Rehabilitation Unit.
