House, 13/13 Stevens Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from the 1890s. It is a fine example of the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture. The place has aesthetic value for its fine design and detailing as well as its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the more affluent building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of a fine residence in the Fremantle area. It has historic and social significance for its former use as the Skye Nursing Home.
House, 13/13 Stevens Street a fine example of a single storey brick, limestone and zincalume residence built in the the Federation Queen Anne style of architecture. The walls are tuck pointed brick, and limestone with brick quoins. The roof is hipped and gabled, and clad in corrugated zincalume. The main gable has vertical timber battens and decorative timber bracket supports attached to the brick wall. There are two substantial rendered corbelled chimneys. The verandah wraps around three sides of the house, with a separate dropped roof supported by square timber posts and a timber balustade.The asymmetrical façade has two protruding front rooms with timber framed sash bay windows. The front door has top and side lights, and leadlight glass. The residence is sited above ground level on sloping ground, and accessed via the curved front steps. A rear garage with roller door has been added.
Stevens Street was originally known as Church Street c1900, the boundary of the old Alma St Church of England Cemetery. It changed to Stephen Street in c1930. In 1962 spelling was changed to Stevens Street, probably to honour Jimmy Stevens, Councillor (1905-1929; 1929-1943). Originally commissioned by John Middleton Ferres, this place is likely to have been constructed c1920. The place operated as Skye Nursing Home. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
