The place has aesthetic value for its natural setting.
The place has associations with the construction of the Boyanup-Busselton Railway and with the development of the Capel district and industry.
The place has been used for railway purposes since its construction in 1894.
There is some suggestion that the place may be of rarity value.
The Capel River Railway Bridge is located to the north-east of the town and is visible only from within the Capel Dairy grounds or from directly along the track. A very tall and long timber structure constructed over a deep ravine in a dense bush setting. The original structure appears to be relatively intact; however, the site is difficult to access and while the standard use of stringers, corbels, posts, whalers and cross bracing is evident, the construction detail is not readily evident.
The State-wide Large Timber Structures Survey indicates that the bridge was originally constructed in 1894 as part of the Boyanup-Busselton Railway. The Survey states that the bridge has been subject to maintenance work in 1923 and again in 1994.
