Statement of Significance

This place is representative of early settlement within Bayswater and has historic associations with Frederick Stone, a pioneer of Bayswater. Stone was influential in the development of Bayswater. The site is also significant for its associations with garden nurseries, a common occupation within the area.

Physical Description

Brick and stone house with a corrugated iron multiple hipped roof flanked by tall brick chimneys. A separate corrugated iron roof supported on full height timber poles and with a metal filigree frieze forms a deep awning across the front of the house. This is probably a recent addition as are the triple windows to the front.

History

This was the residence of Frederick Stone who might be called the real pioneer of Bayswater. He bought Swan Location W in 1881 and sold parts of it off retaining the area nearest the river for himself, until he sold it to a developer and, it would seem, leased back his own property. (He generally seemed to have been in financial straits). This being the case, the house might well date from the early 1880s, although there is the possibility that it was an early structure, improved by Stone at a later date. At that stage it was surrounded by Frederick Stone's nursery, as he was one of the very early nurserymen in the district, specialising in decorative plants. Apart from being one of three landholders or lessees in the district in the early 1880s, Stone is an important, if somewhat enigmatic, character in the very early history of Bayswater. He was involved in the campaign to have the school built and was the second Road Board Secretary. He was also a pillar of the Methodist Church. Eventually, he left the District to take up a Road Board post in the country.
