Statement of Significance

House, 12 Onslow Street is a single storey timber and iron house dating from 1917. It has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock and of working people’s living conditions within the residential areas of Fremantle. The place is significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture.

Physical Description

House, 12 Onslow Street is a single storey timber and iron symmetrically constructed house. Walls are painted weatherboard. The hipped roof is clad in Zincalume and has a painted brick chimney with corbelling. There is a separate bull nosed verandah supported by turned timber posts and decorative brackets and infill balustrading. There is a Zincalume clad and timber awning over the side window. The place has compatible additions at the rear of the house.

History

The c1911 sewerage map (No. 2133) shows a weatherboard building on the lot, however, Fremantle Rate Books show that Lot 1467 was recorded as a vacant lot until at least 1914/15. The structure could have been related to the corner shop on Lot 1 (114 Holland St). In 1917, Post Office Directories record a Robert Hicks living at No 12, and the Rate Books from 1920/21 confirm that a cottage owned by the Government was built on Lot 1467, occupied by Robert Hicks. Hicks lived there many years. When post office records ceased in 1949, the occupant was Mrs A Hicks.
