The place is a good example of a rendered masonry residence in the Federation Bungalow style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the Post World War I period. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Single storey brick house built on limestone foundations has a terracotta tiled hipped roof. The house is sited diagonally on the lot with the entrance addressing the street on a north west angle. The roof has two brick and rendered chimneys and a small vented gable, extends over the verandah and is supported by turned timber posts and decorative timber frieze and balustrades. The timber framed casement windows have stained leadlight glass panes and decorative rendered skirts below the sills.
Ellen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. The vacant lot was owned by Alice Pearse until Barney Silbert bought it from her in 1918/19. Silbert erected a dwelling on the site in 1920/21.
