Statement of Significance

House, 25 East Street, is a timber framed and weatherboard and iron single storey house dating from 1897 has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: the place has some aesthetic value as a Federation Bungalow style of architecture and for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area; the place has some historic value as a late nineteenth century residence that contributes to the story of the development of workers’ housing in Fremantle, and; the place contributes to the community’s sense of place.

Physical Description

House, 25 East Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with shingle style timber boards. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with corrugated iron. The gable end features a finial. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof supported by turned and chamfered timber posts. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room with two timber framed double hung sash windows under a corrugated iron awning supported by timber brackets. A tree in the front yard prevents further description of the front elevation. There is a rendered corbelled chimney evident. The house is situated at street level. There is a timber picket fence to the front boundary line. A Heritage Assessment was prepared in April 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for a proposed front fence to be constructed 1800 high from rendered masonry with metal

History

East Street was the original eastern boundary of the Fremantle townsite. A cottage was built on the lot in 1897. The first owner and occupant was M J Cullity, a labourer. A Heritage Assessment was prepared in April 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for a proposed front fence to be constructed 1800 high from rendered masonry with metal framed gates and timber infill.
