House, 89 South Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from 1929. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.
House, 89 South Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped with a central half gable and clad with tiles. The verandah is under a continuous tiled roof and is supported by large brick edged and rendered archways (not original) and an iron balustrade. The symmetrical front façade has a central door with top and side fanlights, flanked on either side by windows that are covered with modern roller shutters. There is a low brick wall to the front boundary line and a central iron gate.
In 1924/25 this was a vacant lot owned by Frank Biddles who also owned lots 12 and 13. By 1929/30 there was a house on the lot owned and occupied by William Percy Griffiths who was a Fremantle City Councillor for 27 years. The house was originally number 205 South St. In 1939/40 it was renumbered 87 South St, later becoming no.89 South St in 1959/60 at which time it was still owned and occupied by W. P. Griffiths. The house is on lot 14 of 35 CSL 7.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability). Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining. (These statements based on street survey only).
