STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE No 19 Glyde Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with an iron roof in the Federation Bungalow style. The place has historic and aesthetic value with its contribution to Plympton's high concentration of worker’s cottages and associated buildings. It contributes to the local community’s sense of place. The place has considerable heritage value for its intrinsic aesthetic value as a Federation Bungalow style house. It retains a moderate to high degree of authenticity and a moderate degree of integrity. The rear additions have no significance. AESTHETIC SIGNIFICANCE No 19 Glyde Street has considerable aesthetic value as a good example of Federation Bungalow style house. It has retained most of the characteristic features of the style. HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE No 19 Glyde Street has some historic value. It was part of the suburban residential development associated with the expansion of East Fremantle during the Goldrush period of the 1880s and 1890s. SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE N/A SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE No 19 Glyde Street has some social value. It is associated with a significant area of worker’s cottages which contributes to the community's sense of place.

Physical Description

Late Victorian / Early Federation Victorian Regency No 19 Glyde Street is a single storey residence constructed of limestone and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width and return skillion roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a replacement St Andrew’s cross balustrade. There is a thrust bay under a gabled roof which features the front door and a single pane double hung sash window. The openings are surrounded with rendered quoins. The remainder of the house is set back from the thrust bay under a hipped roof. The walls to this section are rendered. There are extensive additions to the rear. The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

History

Plympton is a cohesive precinct where most of the places were constructed in the late nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. It is comprised primarily of homes for workers and their families with a high concentration of small lots with timber, brick and stone cottages. No 19 Glyde Street is a good example of a house in the Federation Bungalow style.
