The single storey brick and iron cottage, in the Federation Arts & Crafts style, has cultural significance because: it has long historical associations with the Whitfield and Cariss families, valued members of the Peppermint Grove community; it is an attractive and representative example of a Federation Arts & Crafts style cottage, which presents strikingly to the street; it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area. The place is an attractive example of a cottage in the Federation Arts & Crafts style which has been adapted in its plan form to maximise the presentation to the street The place is a good example of a Federation Arts & Crafts cottage where the stylistic elements of the decorative gables are given greater prominence by the rhythm of the 'waterfall front' arrangement.
