Statement of Significance

Delrama is a good example of a middle-class residence and of a dentist residence. Its distinct style contributes to the built fabric of Katanning. It is socially significant because of its association with Mr and Mrs Hedges Dale who contributed greatly to the development of the community of Katanning and its many facilities.

Physical Description

Asymmetrical Inter-war bungalow in brick construction with roughcast rendered balustrades between brick piers. It has French doors leading into a full width front verandah. The verandah is carried on this square posts and has a gable over the entry. The roof is replacement colourbond. An addition to the left hand side is primitive. A new garden fence surrounds a simply lawned garden with a collection of canary island palms, petunia beds and roses. The carport, fence and side extension are intrusive. In 1996 the owners of the property undertook significant restoration work and a timber was added in October 2000.

History

Delrama was built as a residence for the local dentist, Mr Stanley Hedges Dale, who practised in Katanning from 1921 to 1957. It was built around the time he married Muriel Beeck, daughter of the well-known sheep-breeder H O Beeck in 1925. As well as being the district dentist, Stanley Dale was also a member of the Katanning Roads Board, formed the Swimming Pool Committee (and so was instrumental in the construction of the pool), he was the first secretary of the Hospital Comforts Association and was the Chairman of Directors of the Katanning Flour Mill (as well as the largest shareholder).
