Statement of Significance

The site represents a way of life no longer practiced, and associations with pioneers of the district.

Physical Description

Paddock The buildings originally on site included corrugated iron and timber bush sheds for refreshments and the "administration of races", marshalling yards, of which some bush timbers are still evident. Railway tarpaulins were used over the frames.

History

The course was cleared and constructed on public land (crown land) by volunteers in 1925. A local committee consisting of Gotsch, Mullan and Healey, acted as guarantors for the funds. Meetings were held in rotation with neighbouring centres. Many race days were held in farmers paddocks throughout the region. The races were a popular social gathering a, with "SP" bookies on site, and drinks permitted as long as the Wickepin policeman was present. Persons causing a disturbance would be locked in the railway waiting room in order for the policeman to continue his social activities. Money raised on the days events was used for the Dudinin Hall. With the advent of the depression, and the difficult times, the bank called for repayment of the loan, and Hermann Gotsch purchased the land.
