Physical Description

House, 55a Forrest Street is a single storey timber framed house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are flat fibrous cement sheeting clad (probably originally weatherboard clad). The Zincalume roof is gabled and extends over the front verandah which is supported by square timber posts. There are mature trees within the front garden.

History

The house was first listed in Post Office Directories in 1902 with William A. Gilbert as resident. Numbers were allocated in 1905, at which time the house was No. 148. It became number 55 when the whole street was renumbered in 1939. William Gilbert lived at No 55 from 1902 when the house was built until c1944, followed by Mrs L. E Dwelly who was there until at least 1949 (when directory records cease). The 1914 sewerage map (No. 2118) shows a weatherboard house with a full-length front verandah. Early aerials show the front part was a hipped roof and there was a skillion behind, larger in area. Aerial photos show that between 2010 and 2015 the lot was subdivided and a two-storey new house was built at the rear.
