Statement of Significance

This large single storey face brick, timber and tiled residence, in the Federation Bungalow style, has cultural significance because: it is one of the landmark places inPeppermint Grove due to its size, quality and location; it is an exemplar of its style and period which retains a high level of integrity; it has historical associations with Augustus Roe, Police Magistrate, the succeedingRoe family and the Cullitys; it demonstrates that the bureaucratic elite of their day chose to reside in PeppermintGrove; it is part of a cultural group; it is part of a townscape area.

Physical Description

The residence is one of the finest, most handsome, large bungalows constructed along the Peppermint Grove foreshore, during the Gold Boom period. It is one of the landmarks of PeppermintGrove.

History

The place was built c.1900 for Augustus Roe, Police Magistrate. Augustus Roe was the youngest son of Perth's first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe. The place remained in the Roe family for 65 years until purchased by the Cullitys. Considerable historical significance.

The residence is one of the finest designs of Olsen and Sanders and is an exemplar of its style, which retains a high level of integrity
