Statement of Significance

House, 35 Marmion Street, is a single storey stone and iron house dating from c1914. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 35 Marmion Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed as a simple variation of the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with zincalume. There are two red face brick corbelled chimneys evident. The verandah is under a separate zincalume bull nose roof supported by turned and chamfered timber posts. There are roof vents visible between the verandah and main roof line. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room under the gable roof with windows under a smaller bullnose zincalume awning. The house is situated at street level. There is a limestone and timber picket fence to the front boundary line. Vegetation in the front yard prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

According to council rates there was a cottage in 1914/15. It was built for the Workers Homes Board, it became private property in 1935/36, and the street number changed in 1937. In the real estate section of the Fremantle Gazette in September 1987 the house appears to be brick or stone, with a double front, a protruding room on the left with a light metal canopy over the sash window and a porch protecting the right hand side. The roof is tile or tile look-a-like, with a hipped roof and verandah under the main roof, with the front left hand room having a separate hipped section. The verandah has been built in with a low wall between masonry pillars and louvered windows above. There is a fibro extension on the right hand side of the house. There are also 2 brick chimneys, one on either side of the house. The article reports the house to be of limestone, brick, iron and tile. In 1999 the same house is in the real estate section of the same paper, showing the rear weatherboard extension, with a small porch on the right hand side (viewing from the back) with 4 timber steps and a Greenaway-style railing and a room on the left hand side. In 2009 the Fremantle Herald lists the property as a 1912 cottage.
