Statement of Significance

Contemporary infill building which received a Fremantle Award in 1983.

Physical Description

Two storey face brick and simple parapeted shopping complex extending via an arcade and a walk-through to Paddy Troy Mall and South Terrace via South Terrace Piazza, includes a car park on the ground floor. The doors and hopper windows are metal framed with simple stucco architraves. The veranda and awnings have Colorbond roofing supported by timber posts, the first floor walkways over the arcade have balustrades.

History

Along William Street there were workshops since c1910. From c1940 it included a meat market, then a motor workshop and factory, Howard Porter's. In 1981 developers Vox Adeon, Gillon and Osboine purchased the land for the 'Crossroads' development, for retail and offices. In 1982 the various industrial buildings (motor vehicle dealers etc) were demolished and the Fremantle Malls built. The malls extend through to South Terrace via South Terrace Piazza. This place received a Fremantle Award in 1983. Currently (2013), houses various shops and offices.
