STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE No 32 Sewell Street is a single storey shop and attached house constructed in painted and rendered masonry with a corrugated iron roof. The place has historic and aesthetic value with its contribution to Plympton's high concentration of worker’s cottages and associated buildings. It contributes to the local community’s sense of place. The place has some heritage value for its intrinsic aesthetic value as a shop with an attached Federation Bungalow. It retains a moderated to low degree of authenticity and a high degree of integrity. The rear additions have no significance. The verandah enclosure is intrusive. Physical Description

Federation / Interwar Queen Anne / Art Deco Influences No 32 Sewell Street is a single storey shop and attached residence constructed in rendered and painted masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with a plainly rendered shop. There have been extensive modifications including some in the twenty-first Century. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned the shop on the south side and the house to the north side. The facade features a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah has been enclosed with glazing. There is a central door located through an arch way. The shop front features an offset door flanked by a shop window. The shop openings are under a replacement awning. A prominent parapet wall extends above the awning. The shop sits on the lot boundary while the residence is set back. There are additions to the rear. The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

History

Historic Theme: Demographic Settlement Plympton is a cohesive precinct, where most of the places were constructed in the late nineteenth century and the first quarter of the twentieth century. It is comprised primarily of homes for workers and their families with a high concentration of small lots with timber, brick and stone cottages. The place appears to have been modified in the Inter-War period and the original awning has been removed.
