Constructed from 1908
The place, for its building form and architectural characteristics, makes a positive contribution to the streetscape and is representative of early development within Bayswater. The place is indicative of the speculative building and land development that occurred in Bayswater c. 1904 - 1907.
Timber frame and jarrah weatherboard house with corrugated iron roof comprising a main hipped roof and gable roof to each of two projecting wings - one at the front and one to the side. A separate bull-nose iron roof covers the verandah which runs across the front and side between the projecting wings. This verandah roof is supported on full height timber posts which also support the side verandah which is elevated because of the ground slope. Windows are generally of the double hung wooden sash frame type.
This house was built by John A. Makin in 1908. Almondbury Street was situated on land which had been acquired by the Intercolonial Land and Investment Company, clearly taking the opportunity to benefit from the increased saleability of Bayswater land in 1904.

This site has now been demolished. The record is maintained for historical information purposes.
Small brick building with gable roof on corrugated metal with a single low pitch roofed extension to the rear. A separate low pitch roof covers the deep canopy over the pavement on both street fronts supported on full height timber posts, and with a timber framed hoarding running across the top of the posts. The corner entrance is flanked by large fixed windows on each side.
This shop was built to serve the homes in the Surbiton Estate being built around May, Lawrence and Arundel Streets and The Strand from 1911. The owner, Frederick Silverwood, is listed in the Post Office Directory at a store in Arundel Street in 1915 and it was taken over by Levi Wardley in the early 1920s. He lived in the house on the corner opposite the store.

This place has environmental and social significance. It has historic value for its association with Jim Claughton, who was influential to this part of Bayswater.
Public open space on the foreshore of the Swan River with flat and undulating grassed areas amongst clumps of River Gums and with reeded sandy beach to the river. An access driveway leads to a boatshed and launching ramp and there are riverside walking paths.
This parkland was a product of the move towards improvement of the riverfront, undertaken during the early sixties. During 1961, the Whatley Park Progress Association campaigned successfully for this reserve and it was named in honour of Jim Claughton, a tireless worker for that part of the district.

Constructed from 1950, Constructed from 1920
This place has significance for its civic functions and is representative of the inter and post war development of Bedford and Bayswater.
Timber framed one room building with a gable roof of corrugated metal with large eaves overhang on all sides supported by angled braces from the side walls. A small lean-to porch at one end provides entry and four double hung wooden sash windows on each side provide light. The exterior walls are clad below sill height with jarrah weatherboard and the remainder with fibre cement sheeting. The whole building is supported on timber stumps.
This original classroom at Hillcrest is evidence of the urgency with which Hillcrest School was built. Post War housing had burgeoned in Bedford Park and school accommodation was desperately needed. To ensure that the school was opened for the pupils to commence the 1950 school year, three existing classrooms were transported from East Fremantle and placed on the site, of which one still remains.

Constructed from 1949
This place is representative of post war industrialisation within Bayswater and is unusual for its architectural style.
Single storey brick office building in the modern style with a tall parapet to street and entrance driveway. The walls are cement rendered except for a continuous horizontal band of natural brickwork incorporating the double-hung wooden frame sash windows. The front and side of the building are linked by a large radiused corner making both flow together as a continuous . There is also a brick capping to the parapet. The main entrance is protected by a reinforced concrete canopy with an angular end and steel pipe support, and linked to a prominent element supporting a large back-lit sign.
This factory was opened in the late 1940s as Ray Kelly's Joinery Works and was used to assemble pre-fabricated houses. Much of the early industrial development along Beechboro Road consisted of workshops connected with the building industry. This building represents the first stage of Post War industrialisation along Beechboro Road, the aerial photograph of 1953 showing it as an isolated development in an otherwise rural landscape. It is noted for the imaginative style, clearly intended to present a go-ahead and modern image.

Constructed from 1919 to 1930
This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater, in particular the expanding settlement along Beechboro Road. The place has historic value for its association with Gold Estates, one of the most prominent land developers within Bayswater at the time.
Brick built shops facing Beechboro Road with stepped parapets above tied cantilever metal canopies running continuously across the front and around the corner into Foyle Street. This canopy has a ribbed metal soffit to the underside and is stepped down to accommodate the slope of the hill. The shop fronts all have tiled dados up to waist height, some now painted over, but still showing the original black and white patterning on the Hairdressing salon; (suggesting it may have been a butcher's shop). This and the delicatessen have large modern glass display windows with a single entry door on the right hand side, whilst the smaller fish and chip shop at the end has a pair of central wooden doors flanked by older style display windows. The parapet on this end shop has a prominent vertical neon sign featuring a fish silhouette. The corner shop has triple wood frame windows on either side of the corner doorway. There is a long accommodation section behind the corner shop and its semi-detached neighbour with corrugated iron roofs separated by a longitudinal brick parapet. Windows to this section extending along Foyle Street are modern aluminium sliding type.
The group of shops at the corner of Foyle Street and Beechboro Road is built around two older buildings. The original corner shop was opened in 1919 by Emily Thompson, laundress, of Bulwer and Fitzgerald Street, North Perth. The following year, Albert Baillie, grocer and produce merchant, opened a store on the adjoining allotment. Modern facades and additional shops were added in the middle 1930s in the manner of 'strip' shopping centres. By that time there was a substantial community settled along Beechboro Road and the demand for commercial premises had grown.

This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. The place has historic value for its association with the Melsom family, in particular Nurse Melsom, a prominent local midwife.
Large brick building with corrugated metal hip roof set in extensive grounds and surrounded by large trees. Original wide verandahs all round the house have been subsumed into the body of the present house during extensive remodelling in recent times. These have all been replaced with brick walls and large plate glass windows.
This was the house built by George Melsom, poultry farmer, just after the Great War. Its main association is with Nurse Melsom, a renowned local midwife who began her Brenthill Hospital on the site in c.1926. Previously she had attended births at private residences.

Constructed from 1904
This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. It is part of the early development resulting from the Copley / Burnside subdivision, that occurred in response to the relocation of the Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.
Elevated brick house with corrugated metal hip roof with vented peaks covering a verandah across the front and down one side (now enclosed with glass louvred windows). The front verandah has a brick balustrade and brick pillars supporting the roof and is approached by a flight of cement steps.
This house was built by Alfred William Burns, workshops employee, in 1908. It is noticeable that the larger houses in the Burnside/Copley Street subdivision tend to be on double blocks in Burnside Street, which afforded a commanding view and was close to the Railway Station. The house appears to be one of the original houses in Burnside Street.

• the place has aesthetic value as a landscaped garden in an urban setting. • the place has aesthetic value as a landmark in the streetscape and the community. • the place has historic value for its association with the servicemen and women from the district who served in the AIF during World War One and all subsequent international conflicts. • the place has historic value for its association with the many memorial services which have been held at the site since 1960. • the place has historic value for its association with Grace Hardie who made a valuable contribution to the City of Bayswater through her work with the Bayswater Historical Society. • the place has social value for the many members of the community who have attended memorial services as participants or observers since 1960.
The area designated as the Bayswater War Memorial and the Grace Hardie Memorial Rose Gardens is a grassed area bound by Halliday Park to the south, Burnside Street to the north, Coode Street on the west and a private property to the east. The site is sloped down from Burnside Street to Halliday Park. Roughly centrally on the southern boundary is located the Bayswater War Memorial. The memorial is a simple stone column erected on a rough hewn granite plinth. The main face of the memorial faces to the north where a semicircular paved area surrounds it. On the southern side of the memorial is a retaining wall and simple balustrade. The engraving and plaques on the memorial recognise the members of the Bayswater district who died in overseas conflicts. On the border of the paved area are two garden beds separated by paving which create a formal landscape element to the garden. The remainder of the site includes mature trees and plantings that are randomly located on the site. A small decorative gazebo is located on the western side of the site. Benches are located near the memorial and within the gazebo. A plaque is located on the end of one of the benches to recognise the contribution of local resident Grace Hardie.
The majority of the land which is now the Bayswater War Memorial and Grace Hardie Memorial Rose Garden are now located were acquired by the Bayswater Road Board in 1949. They were previously owned by private individuals but were never developed. A smaller portion of land to the east was acquired by the Road Board in 1939, it is presumed they were acquired to enable pedestrians to walk from Rose Avenue across the park to Burnside Street. The land was largely roughly cleared open ground in contrast to the lawns on Halliday Park. An aerial photograph of the site in 1953 shows it is crossed by rough tracks and shrubs. In 1960, the Bayswater War Memorial was relocated to the site and earthworks undertaken to create a level platform for the memorial and allow visitors to traverse the site safely. The distinctive semicircular garden beds were created at this time. A program of planting was also instigated to create an appropriate setting for the memorial. Since that time the Bayswater War Memorial has been the venue for the district Anzac Service and other services as required. Many local residents and groups attend these functions and it is noted that the popularity of the Anzac Dawn Service is growing every year. The City of Bayswater Christmas Carols is held at this venue every year which is a popular and well attended event in the community. In 1998, the garden beds planted with roses surrounding the memial were enhanced and named in honour of local resident Grace Hardie who had made a significant contribution to the local community through her work with the Bayswater Historical Society.

Constructed from 1910
This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. It is part of the early development resulting from the Copley / Burnside subdivision, that occurred in response to the relocation of the Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.
Elevated brick and iron house on a full storey height masonry plinth and with a corrugated metal hip roof vented at the peaks and covering a surrounding verandah. This is approached by a flight of cement steps with curving walled sides and brick pillars at the foot. The roof is supported on full height timber posts with ornate carved wooden brackets and an open rail balustrade. The central door has top and side lights and has a pair of double hung sash windows on each side. There is a stucco band running around the brick wall at door head height.
This land comprised the old Lots 53 to 57, which were acquired by Edward Penny of Coolgardie in 1907. Unfortunately this was the time when the rate books ceased to list the buildings on particular blocks. Much building was occurring in Burnside and Copley Street during the period 1904-1909 following the relocation of the railway workshops to Midland in 1904. It would be consistent with historic trends if this house were of that period. It is noted, however, that the house appears to be too elaborate for a railway worker's house.

Constructed from 1907
This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. It has historic value for its association with Kate Greenhalsh, a prominent midwife within Bayswater. It is part of the early development resulting from the Copley / Burnside subdivision, that occurred in response to the relocation of the Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.
Timber frame, jarrah weatherboard cottage with corrugated iron hip roof covering a paved front verandah supported on full height steel pipes. The central front door has side lights and is flanked by a window on either side, currently metal frame but originally double-hung wooden sash. A later extension has been added to the left side of the house and a tall brick chimney is attached to the outside of this wing. Another brick chimney with single terracotta pot penetrates the main roof on the other side. The residence has an elevated position to the rear with two gabled wings raised up on timber stumps and a lean-to roofed verandah reached by a wooden staircase.
This was the house and "lying in place" run and managed by one of the two best known midwives in Bayswater, Kate Greenhalsh. She settled in Rose Avenue and then in 1906 acquired the land in Burnside Street and built the house with the help of her male companion, William Blair. Much building was going on in Burnside Street around 1906, and the house was in keeping with this trend. It was almost demolished shortly after the War as part of a beautification campaign for Halliday Park.

The front door has a half glazed panel and is flanked by a double-hung wooden sash window on either side. A short corbelled brick chimney extends above one side wall.
From the Rate Book information available this cottage appears to have been built as a rental property by an absentee owner, Mr Le Cornu c.1905.

A separate bull nosed roof covers the front verandah, which is supported on full height timber posts with open balustrade and approached by a flight of wooden steps. The central panelled front door is flanked by a double-hung wooden sash window on either side.
This cottage is one of a group of houses which was under construction during 1905- 7. Old sewerage maps indicate that there were once six worker's cottages in a row built in Coode Street, just under the subway, and the three at No 7, 15 and 19 Coode Street are the only ones remaining. This cottage appears to have been built and initially occupied by Herbert Bowmont, painter, and subsequently occupied by Alfred Clifford Catt. Those whose occupation was listed as "Painter" were most probably employed at the Midland Workshops and this cottage can be seen as part of the building activity which occurred in response to the relocation of the workshops.
