Constructed from 1869
The MacPherson Homestead has high historic significance for its association with the MacPherson Family who played an important role in the settlement and development of the Carnamah district. Further, the place is highly valued by the local community as as a reminder of the early European settlement of the district. The MacPherson Homestead has particular structural interest with its high walls and steeply pitched roof and is evidence of the use of local materials. It is as a good example of rural, vernacular homesteads in Western Australia.
Located approximately 1km east of Carnamah the MacPherson Homestead is a large building of stone construction with a steeply pitched corrugated iron hipped roof which extends to cover the verandahs. The building is 74 feet in length and 34 feet wide with thick stone walls approximately 14 feet high. A verandah runs along the west elevation and wraps around the north and south corners. The verandah is supported on timber posts and features criss-cross bracing to the balustrades and bush battens underneath the verandah roof. The homestead consists of 4 bedrooms, lounge, passage, dining room, and a bathroom. There are two rendered stone chimneys and windows are timber framed with small panes. There is cement rendered quoining around the openings and corners. Originally a timber sleeper path led to the adjacent cookhouse, storeroom and cellar; the ruins of which are located immediately south-east of the homestead. Nearby are the ruins of a three roomed stone building and a two roomed stone building. The Carnamah Spring is located approximately 200 metres to the north on the edge of a water course. It has been developed and is rock lined.
Duncan MacPherson and George Slater took up land in the vicinity of what became known as Carnamah in September, 1861. Construction of the Homestead commenced in 1869, the building taking five years to complete. Following the alterations to the mail route in 1877 Duncan MacPherson is recorded as having the contract to cart mail from Walebing to Mingenew for the period 1883-1885. Indeed the MacPherson family formed an important part of the remote line of communication that linked Toodyay to the Greenough area. Duncan's daughter Margaret was in charge of the Carnamah Post Office which was housed in the MacPherson Homestead. It was upgraded to become a Post and Telegraph Office in 1895 and remained in use as such until 1913 when Margaret MacPherson retired. The Homestead was also a popular resting place for travellers until 1894 when the Midland Railway Line was completed. When Duncan MacPherson died in April 1898 he left his land to his family of five sons and two daughters who gradually sold the land and moved away from the district. The last of the land owned by the MacPhersons, consisting of 250 acres, including the Homestead, was sold after the daughter Elizabeth passed on cl940. The Homestead continued to be used as a private dwelling, but over the years it was allowed to deteriorate. In 1979 as a committee formed with the aim of restoring the building. (Heydon, pl2 & pi82 and Local Information Sheet) The Carnamah Spring is believed to have been as a watering point for local aborigines. It was purchased as part of Duncan MacPherson's holdings.

This house, as the home of the original settlers in the district and long the centre of the community, is historically important and in its construction reflects the way of life in those early days. It has structural interest with its high walls and steeply pitched roof, bush rafters and battens for the roof and log joists still visible below some of the floors. It is now owned by the Shire and is proposed for use as a historical museum, with landscaped grounds containing old agricultural machinery.
Stone walls, rendered inside, bush timber rafters, originally thatched roof with battens still in place, steep pitch to roof.Restoration and repairs commenced. Original use : dwelling. The house has thick stone walls 14 feet high, rafters are of bush timber and roof, now corrugated iron was originally thatched, the bush battens being still in place. The pitch of the roof is such that the guttering is about head height. Large, carefully selected stones were used on the outside of the walls with smaller ones on the inside with has been roughly rendered. There are four rooms, with a passage at the centre, at the front of the house and verandah on three sides. Five small rooms and a bathroom are along the back - ceilings are low and the log joists below the floor can be seen. The separate kitchen and outhouses are now in ruins. The house was built by Duncan McPherson, a Scottish shepherd who came out with the Drummonds and worked for them at Hawthornden, Toodyay. He later had the contract to cart mail from Walebing to Mingenew and took up the first land at the Carnamah Spring in 1862, starting to build his home there about 1870. His daughter conducted the Post Office from the house from 1875 and later transmitting telegrams became part of her duties. Wayfarers and passing settlers enjoyed the McPherson's hospitality until the railway went through in the 1890s.

Constructed from 1929
The BankWest Building has high local historic significance as a commercial premise which has operated in the town for many years. Further, the building has a long association with banking in Carnamah. The building also has high streetscape value and is representative of country banking premises for its prominent location, scale and building materials.
Located on the main street in Carnamah the BankWest building and attached residence is of brick construction which is rendered to the bank's street facades. The building has a dutch gable corrugated iron roof which is partly hidden by the parapet of the bank. Truncated at the corner where the main entrance is positioned, there are two narrow windows either side of the doorway. There are three timber framed windows to the street facades. The windows to the adjoining residence are double hung. The chimney features unusual detailing.
This building originally functioned as the Bank of Australasia from 17 April, 1929 until June 1947 when it became the Rural and Industries Bank. The building had been badly neglected during the war years and, consequently, was completely renovated prior to the R & I commencing operations. The residential section comprised of three bedrooms, lounge, kitchen, maid's room, a rear sleep out, washroom and toilet. The building was remodelled again in 1982 and in 1994 the R & I Bank became BankWest. (Local Information Sheet)

Constructed from 1963
The Carnamah Shire Hall has some local social and historic significance for its association with local government in the district. Further the building has fulfilled an important social role in the community since 1963 as the venue for sporting activities and social occasions and events.
The Carnamah Shire Hall is a large rectangular building of light brick construction with a shallow pitched gable roof. An addition of smaller scale but similar design is located on the south-east corner of the building. The Hall, which features decorative concrete blocks to the west facade, is located on a prominent corner of the main street in the town.
In 1961 the Carnamah Roads Board, which was established in 1923, became a Shire Council. In 1963 the new Shire Offices and Hall were opened. The Council operated from this building until 1980 when the present offices were opened. (Westward to the Sea, pi02 & 108) Local sources indicate that the hall was built by C.J. Dallimore, who also worked on part of the present school building. (Bridie Evans, Carnamah Notes, November, 1995)

The Museum Building has some local historic significance as a commercial premise which has operated in the town for many years. Further, the place has considerable streetscape value, given its size, location and construction materials. The building is also evidence of the use of local materials. The place is held in high esteem by the community and fulfils an important role as a local museum.
Located on the main street of Carnamah, this small rectangular building is of stone construction with a corrugated iron gable roof which features timber barge boarding to the gable end. A separate verandah roof extends over the footpath and is supported on metal poles. The front facade is partly rendered with more recent brickwork below two large display windows which are either side of the central doorway. There is a lean-to at the rear. Adjacent is an enclosed yard which contains a variety of machinery and a large shadow-line shed to the rear.
Construction of this building commenced in 1925 using local stone quarried from the MacPherson farm. The builder, G.P. Duncan, was assisted by Mr Kroschel, whose daughter, Peg Wells, took over a cafe in the building in 1937. Originally the building included an adjoining residence which was extended so that Mrs Peg Wells could take in boarders. When the TAB took over the building the living quarters were removed. The building is now used by the Carnamah Historical Society as a Museum. (Local Information Sheet)

The Carnamah District High School has some local social significance for its role in education in the Shire.
The original school building is a large rectangular building of brick construction with a hipped tiled roof. This building forms an "L" shape and features a separate hip roof over the main double entry doors which are surrounded by glass panes. The brick walls are rendered to Vi height and painted cream. Windows are timber framed and double hung. There are brick extensions to the east, west and south which are quite sympathetic in scale and materials. Together with the original section they form a quadrangle.
The first school in Carnamah opened in July, 1912. The present school building opened on 13 December 1950 and now operates as the Carnamah District High School. (Westward to the Sea, p30, p86, p90 & p99) Local builder, C.J. Dallimore, was responsible for the construction of part of the school: He was also involved with the building of the Shire Hall [Place No. 2], (Bridie Evans, Carnamah Notes, November, 1995)

The War Memorial has local historic significance for its association with the two world wars. Further the site has social significance as a reminder of the local people who lost their lives during the wars. The Memorial is representative of other War Memorials in country towns in terms of its scale, form and prominent location.
Located on a prominent site in the Carnamah townsite, the War Memorial is a granite plinth set in a small garden. Standing on a three tiered base, the memorial is 3 XA metres high and tapered to the top. Four similar but smaller granite plinths are located in front (to the east) of the memorial. These originally surrounded the memorial and were linked by a chain. Cement slabs surround the memorial. The white marble plaque on the memorial has the names in black letters of those who gave their lives in the two world wars from both Carnamah and Coorow.
The War Memorial was built in 1931 by public subscription. At that time the towns of Coorow and Carnamah were jointly administered. (Local Information Sheet)

The Wallaces News and Drapery Building is of local historic significance as a commercial premise which has operated in the town for many years. Given its prominent location, scale and form the place has high streetscape value and is also a focal element of the townscape. Further the building is representative of corner shops in country towns.
Located prominently on the corner of MacPherson Street and the Midlands Road, this large shop is of brick construction with a hipped corrugated iron roof which is partly hidden behind a parapet which extends around both street facades. Similarly the verandah extends around the shop frontages and is supported on metal posts and features decorative metal scroll-like brackets. Signage boards conceal the separate verandah roof. The shop features large display windows and has large air conditioning units attached to the roof.
This building was originally owned and built by Cowderoy's in 1924, the Walsh's in the 1980's and then the Black's. In the past it has contained three shops - drapery, tearooms and fruit shop as well as being a dressmaker in the late 1940s. (Heydon, p30 & Bridie Evans, Carnamah Notes, 1995)
