Constructed from 1896
An important English Vernacular Revival house of state significance and associated with George Temple Poole an eminent architect. It posseses great aesthetic value.
1995 Comment: Old lock-up. Important example of George Temple Poole 'Vernacular Revival' architecture. Today the buildings have been made into two private residences. Additions to the stables/lockup were necessary for that property to become a dwelling. Although there are now two owners for the stables and house the description from the National Trust's documents covers both. Refer also to Stirling Highway No. 435, Lots 1-2/96, The Old Claremont Police Station and Lockup. An English 'Vernacular Revival' composition of coursed limestone rubble construction and shingles with an iron roof built in 1895. It is a two-storey structure and is a complex composition of elements made to resemble an English country cottage. The overall impact is one of great beauty and visual complexity. It is one of a number of vernacular designs by George Temple Poole. The building is described as "comprising six-roomed quarters for the officers, stables and two cells and the usual appurtenances" (PWD report 1895/6). According to Molyneux the roof was originally shingled as well. Additional Comment: On the State Heritage Register. Reason for Inclusion 1. The place is of higher-order local cultural heritage significance, being classified as Category 2 in the Town’s Municipal Inventory (MI). 2. The place is also heritage classified on the State Register of Heritage Places. 3. The place contributes to the character and amenity of the street, locality and overall district.

Constructed from 1914
Landmark building of aesthetic, social and historic significance which served as the district's fire station from 1914 to 1988. The building and its striking facade provides important evidence of the influence of the gold boom from the turn of the century.
1995 Comment: Landmark building of historical and architectural interest. Former Claremont Fire Station. A large two-storey red brick building, 1914, with contrasting stucco decoration and new Zincalume roof. Designed in the 'Federation Free Classical' style by Jack Ochiltree. Symmetrically balanced with central part projecting with dual entrances, for former fire engines, with corbelled lintel supported by rusticated pilasters. Upstairs windows above entrances are arched and decorated with tall elaborate keystone motifs. Side wings are recessed with parapeted gables. The building is a prominent landmark on the corner of Congdon Street and Stirling Highway. A recent addition is a low enclosure wall at the front and sides. Additional Comment: On the State Heritage Register. A more recent modern office wing has been added. Reason for Inclusion 1. The place is of higher-order local cultural heritage significance, being classified as Category 1 in the Town’s Municipal Inventory (MI). 2. The place is also heritage classified on the State Register of Heritage Places. 3. The place contributes to the character and amenity of the street, locality and overall district.

A rare example in Cottesloe of a mannered neo-Georgian styled house.
This 1970 dwelling takes on a neo-Georgian styling that was promoted by the Homes and Living type of magazine and has an American flavour. It is a simple rectangular plan-form home, typical of the 1960s with applied decorative features. The walls are painted white bnck. The simple gabled roof has an intersecting gabled roof over a protruding windowed bay and features a small louvred bellcote effect over the garage. The large low west gable is penetrated by a circular louvred vent. The windows are side hung small paned casement with timber shutters. A concrete tiled roof and decorated tilta-door to garage.

This landmark building and site is very much in need of proper research for although two detailed reports have been commissioned neither has picked up the fact that this was the site of the Splatt Wall & Co Works where pressed metal ceilings were made 1904-9. In particular those for His Majesty's Theatre and as such is of considerable importance. The company sold the mill to Wunderlich in 1909 and ceased producing pressed metal. Presumably.the buildings were converted to be part of the current Flour Mill complex . Whether any part remains needs to be established. | HCWA 1993: Ref No.3234. See file for detailed description and statement of significance. (National Trust files recorded 1978) Formerly known as the "Eureka", the flour mill has been a landmark of 2 the district for nearly eighty years. Built of red brick, of solid industrial design; with symmetric 4 pane windows on all floors. It has been expanded over the years, each addition blending in with the original building. The mill boasted the very latest in industrial machinery and in 1909 was run by steam power, supplied by the Cottesloe Electric Light Station. In later years it was converted to gas.
Old Electricity Station, Pressed- steel Works and Eureka Flour Mill "The mill is interesting aesthetically, being well proportioned and composed in an orderly manner, with the south facade having abbreviated pilasters and pediment, in the classical manner, formed in brick detailing." Constructed in 1938 to drawings of 1936. "The structure consists of load bearing brickwork in English bond using Cardup bricks. The ground floor walls are 18" thick and have window openings, to the two exterior elevations, which housed four pane vertical sliding sash windows. The window heads are bridged by shallow segmented arches consisting of three header courses. At first floor level and above, the walls are in 13.5 English bond reinforced by 27" brick pilasters. The fenestration pattern is repeated on both elevations, except that the door openings (served by a hoist above) occur in the central bay on the long elevation. There is a substantial parapet and a plain brick pediment gable in 9" brickwork with simple strong, yet elegant brick detailing as decoration". For further details see Heritage Council files, and database The original Flour Mill, situated towards the middle of the block - beyond the metal mill?, was three storeys high in wood and iron and was of a most substantial character - 10x10" jarrah uprights 36 ft high supported 10x5" cross members. These can be seen inside the fabric of the brick building. The remains of the rail spur constructed to allow access to the site are still visible. This site housed Splatt Wall & Go's Electric Light Works [1899/1902 - ?] and Pressed-Steel Works [April 1904-1909] as well as the Eureka Flour Mill [Dec 1904 - ?] owned originally by W. J. Splatt, L. B. Wall and Frank Wilson MLA. The latter was built on a block of land adjoining the premises of Splatt Wall. The metal-works, which have not yet been identified within the site, had an additional shed 50'x40' built in August 1904. Because of the vibrations the metal presses were set was on a bed of concrete 6'x9' x 2 deep which should enable it to be located within the complex. The Electric Light Works occupied the south west corner. 1995 Comment: Rare example of 'Industrial' architecture with fine Georgian proportions. Metal and flour mill. Constructed from 1919
This house has some histoncal significance.
Dwelling has been demolished. "Eddystone", A sprawling weatherboard bungalow on a large elevated block. "Eddystone" is an historic house but not one easily able to be seen behind the high limestone walls and rampant herbage. The roof is zincalume with a flagpole atop the hip roofed belvedere. The timber verandah posts are square. The timber railings have wire mesh below. Most windows appear to be modern. Limestone footings to the house also appear to be recent as do large cement columns holding up the cement floored deck which extends in front of the house roofing a double garage. A steel structure on this supports a sail-roofed outdoor entertainment area. A second storey belvedere appears to be modern. It has windows all round and slats under the eaves. Tennis court to the side. The profile of the weather boards is Edwardian but very little else appears to be original although the house retains its sprawling summer house ambience.
This was the home of Captain William Fraser Oates probably the same Captain William Dates MLA, mining expert - tin then gold, manager of Fraser's South mine in Southern Cross who smelted the first gold on the Eastern Goldfields. First Mayor of Southern Cross. His daughter married Warden Finnerty. He had a villa in Mounts Bay Road, Perth, 1897 MLA for Southern Cross. Kimberley pages101-2. Captain W. Oates purchased Shenton's shops on the corner of Barrack and Hay Street renamed them the Economic Stores. In 1906 took in a shareholder and built the current building still standing but modified. Oates died before 1913. So the house in Cottesloe was probably his beach cottage and definitely built before 1919. Battye vol.1, page 698-9 Possibly "Eddystone" was Oates beach house as the Hills are reputed to have bought it from a Captain Oates. The second owner was H. Hill Shire Clark who had previously lived in 1 Broome Street. There is an Oral History Tape held by the Cottesloe Society. It is an interview with his wife on her 100th birthday.

Constructed from 1990
A substantial house by one of Perth's innovative architectural 'rebels' [Noel Klopper] that sits comfortably in the context of Cottesloe and reinterprets Federation Filigree in a clever way.
This 1990s house is constructed of ashlar limestone with face brick sills and string courses. The roofs are steeply pitched zincalume with timber finials. The west verandah features a two storey belvedere with a faceted conical roof. The verandah valances and balustrades are in timber filagree. The house defies convention but draws on many Federation Filigree elements to create an innovative look back at the Filigree Style. All windows are powder coated aluminium. The large limestone garden wall at the boundary is somewhat out of kilter in contrast with the lightness of touch on the main house.

Constructed from 1934
Fine example of interwar Mediterranean architecture built for Councillor Birkbeck owner of Birkbeck's Model Dairy. The dairy was opposite at no 3. They had previously lived at 7 Balfour Street, originally his parents home.
This house built in 1934 stands on a prominent corner block in North Cottesloe. It has a medium pitched hipped and gabled roof. The gable section projects forward from the rest of the house and has a tiled gablee verge. A pergola, an interal part of the design, is supported on "Tuscan" columns. Arched detail over the windows echoes the entry arch. The walls are stuccoed. The windows pairs of casements. The house was designed by J. G. Foreman the shire clerk of "Foreman's Folly" fame. 1995 Comment: Birkbeck's home. Model dairy owner and Councillor. Fine example of interwar Mediterranean. Foreman the shire clerk of "Foreman's Folly" fame. 2002 Reassessment: This house is associated with Councillor Birkbeck, owner of Birkbeck's Model Dairy, and has some heritage value in the Cottesloe context. Reason for Inclusion: 1. The place is of higher-order local cultural heritage significance, being classified as Category 2 in the Town’s Municipal Inventory (MI). 2. In 2005 the Town undertook a review of MI Category 2 places towards the Heritage List for LPS3. The study recommended that the property be retained as Category 2. 3. The place contributes to the character and amenity of the street, locality and overall district.
