The Kojonup Co-op has historic and social significance to the Kojonup community having been run by the community and providing much needed provisions and services from this location since the early 20th century.
The current Co-op was built in 2009 but on the site of the old Co-op buildings.
In 1924, additions were made to the first co-op store. The Kojonup Co-Op was officially formed in 1946 with P. P. Thom as chairman until 1965. The original store had a smaller frontage with a residence on the south end that also opened into the store. In 1953, the Co-Op was significantly enlarged and modernised. The Co-Op expanded to include Witt’s Butcher, and Martin’s Linga Longa tearooms on the Jones Street corner, and Lebeaters narrow lollie shop south of the residence. The original Co-Op, which fronted Albany Highway, burnt down in February 2009.

This building has historical and social significance for the people of Kojonup as one of the main retail businesses in town, and an important place for people to meet and interact, especially when those from outlying farms came into town. although highly modified, the place continues to provide a supermarket to the local residents.
This building is located on Albany Highway, near the base of the hill in the main street of Kojonup. The building has a parapet wall decorated with simple rectangular motifs - which is likely the original parapet - and no windows are visible on the front elevation. The cantilevered verandah spans the footpath.
Richardson and Company first established a business in a building opposite the Royal Hotel at the top of the hill in Kojonup. When the railway came in 1906 the town centre moved down the hill. Soon after this, in 1910, Richardson's secured the old Commonwealth Hotel site on which to built their new store, and a brick store and dwelling. This was next to the Hotel now known as the Commercial Hotel. When Richardson owned the building, the store had two entrances with front display windows. There were two offices, an accountant's and a manager's. The shop floor was lit by two large dormer type light wells in the roof. At the base of the shop is a cellar, known as Anthony's Cellar, after a popular long-time manager, Bill Anthony. The cellar was part of the original Elverd's Hotel (later the Semblance of Old England). The entrance to the cellar was filled in some time after 1993. The shop stocked a wide variety of goods to supply people who were isolated from the larger business districts of Albany or Bunbury. Richardson's was not a strictly cash business; they accepted produce from farms or clean rabbit skins in payment for food, pharmacy goods, toiletries and clothing among other items. This system was particularly helpful for the farming community during the Depression. Richardsons & Co. continued to trade through WWII but after the war a large Perth retailer, Foy and Gibson took over. Massive changes to staff and the organisation were followed by another takeover bid by David Jones. Richardson's store was then sold and has since changed hands a few times. In 1996 it traded under the Foodland label and this Kojonup Supermarket continues to provide a supermarket service to the people of Kojonup.

The Kojonup Police Station has aesthetic and historic significance. The station was built to replace the 1869 station, in the same reserve on the main street of town, thereby retaining its continuous presence on this site. The design of the station is also an attractive and well-executed example of Late Twentieth Century Stripped Classical, particularly in a regional location. The Police Station has significance also in its association with the adjacent Police Quarters (1907).
A brick building, with a flat roof rectangular section, painted, with strong horizontal and rhythmic proportions particular with the fenestration and window screening, juxtaposed with a projecting gable of cream face-brick with a broad rendered banding framing the gable and a more vertical pattern of fenestration.
A Police Station was originally built in c1869 at this location, having previously been housed at the Old Barracks. In 1965 the new police station and courthouse were built.

This place has aesthetic, historical and social significance as the second Post and Telegraph office for Kojonup and in operation at a time when telegraph technology was in use and connecting Kojonup to the world. Along with the Police Quarters across the road, it is only one of few examples of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture in the main street.
This house, once the second post office in Kojonup, is located at the lower end of High Street opposite the Police Station. The rendered brick (or stone) house is symmetrical, with a window on either side of the front door. The verandah is under a separate roof and wraps around three sides and is supported by timber posts that sit upon a low cement brick wall that partially encloses the lower half of the verandah. The steep pitched hipped roof is made of corrugated iron. There is a fibre cement clad rear addition. A low stone wall encloses a small front garden and on the northern side of the property are a number of fruit trees.
Built around 1888, the house was used as the second post and telegraph office between 1888-1896. The telegraph linked Kojonup to Adelaide and then eventually to the outside world. Louisa Roe was a well-known post mistress.
Integrity - Medium Authenticity - Medium Modifications: Fibro extension at the back and some other changes.

The CWA Centre has historic, aesthetic and social significance. It was the first purpose-built CWA centre to be built in Kojonup, and in the post-war boom period when the CWA was at its peak. It is a well executed, simple building with a high level of authentic fabric and still used for its original purpose. The place is associated with the CWA which has been a very important institution in Kojonup and in most regional areas in WA, demonstrating the significance of the work and activities undertaken by women.
Local bricks, tiled roof, large timber windows. The building is essentially a L-Shape, with hipped room and concrete verandah set in the L. The style reflects Post-War Austerity/Post War Bungalow and is well-executed construction.
The Kojonup Branch of CWA was established in 1932 meeting in the Memorial Hall. In 1946 the CWA started fundraising to build their own centre, under the leadership of Branch President Mrs F Owen, and by the end of 1952 enough funds had been raised to make a start. The tender for construction was awarded in January 1953 to Harold Jones and construction commenced in March 1953. J. F. Cavanagh supervised the construction of the building. The Foundation Stone was unveiled on 14th May 1953 by Marjorie Caw, Foundation President (1932). It was completed and officially opened on 16th October 1953 by State President Lady McLarty, with over 200 attending. As well as being the headquarters for the local CWA, the CWA Memorial Centre was also built as a memorial to the men and women who gave their lives in both World Wars. Its design comprised a large meeting room, loungeroom, kitchen and toilets. The centre functioned as a rest rooms when families came to town on market days, as well as providing meeting rooms for hire. The Kojonup District High School was based there for some years until staffing restrictions caused it to move back to the school grounds. Owing to increasing age of members, it was decided at a Special General Meeting in January 2010 to transfer ownership to the Shire.

Leabeter's House is associated with a local well known family who settled in Kojonup at a time that the town had developed post the arrival of the railway and agricultural growth. The place is a simple vernacular cottage style residence that represents the workers style cottages that were commonly built in the late 19th early 20th century, and reinforcing the desirable main street location.
Timber weatherboard and iron, original front verandah infilled with cement sheeting and back verandah infill. Originally the cottage would have presented a symmetrical form with a medium pitch gable roof and reflects a simple vernacular cottage style residence with some allusions to the Federation period.
1932 – notice in Great Southern Herald newspaper for sale by auction of Sarah Ann Leabeter’s house and furniture being a deceased estate. The house is situated on Town Lot 134 (CT 752/32) in Vanzuilecom Street and is described as a 2 roomed wood and iron dwelling. Sarah Leabeter had a confectionary shop in town. W. I. Leabeter – farmer - in business with J F Logie & Co (possibly son of Alfred?) Mr Alfred Leabeter was a painter arrived from Birmingham in 1912. Died 1922. His mother (Sarah), wife and children survived him.

An attractive and well executed Federation Queen Anne style residence on the main street of town, featuring local stone and brick and other decorative timber features. One of a group of important Federation to Inter-War residential buildings in Kojonup, particularly on the main street, indicative of the development of the town during the early to mid 19th century on the back of the agricultural economy and the supporting commercial services provided in the town. The place is associated with local farmer and later Roads Board member, Frederick Bilney and his family who continue to be well-known identities in Kojonup.
The house is set back, facing onto Albany Highway on the perimeter of the Kojonup townsite. The random rubble stone walls have contrasting brick quoining around the windows and doors and corners and rendered cement lintels. The prominent high pitched half gabled roof is corrugated iron with timber finials on the gable ends, exposed timber rafters under the eaves and three brick chimneys. A prominent wing on the front elevation has a flying gable facing the street with half timbered effect in the gable. A deep verandah under a broken backed roof extends on two sides of the house and a separate large skillion verandah at the rear. Decorative timber frieze and timber balustrading complete the verandah.
Frederick William Bilney came to Kojonup from South Australia in 1898 to farm (sheep). He moved to a house in town after retirement. Bilney was on the Roads Board. The house was transferred to William (Ron) Bilney in 1954 and is still owned by the Bilney family. Although built during the Inter-War period, it reflects the style of the Federation Queen Anne. Past owners of the land include Robert Loton, Joseph Spencer, William Thomas Jones and sons and Irene Fergusson.

Glen Lossie Homestead had a great deal of historical significance one of the earliest homesteads established in Kojonup and being associated with a number of eminent Kojonup residents over the years including: George Leake, George Maxwell, Thomas Chipper, Alexander Moir, Frederick Watts, Thomas Riley who built the stone barn, and James McHenry Clark who named the property "Glenlossie".
Glen Lossie Homestead is located on a portion of Location 7, west of Albany Highway, approximately 1.5km from Kojonup. The homestead block is a very small portion of the original Kojonup Location 7, which was 1,500acres, surveyed in 1845. It would seem that the present building has grown up around an earlier strucutre, built by Thomas Chipper between 1855-1889. In 1912, in the Cyclopoedia of Western Australia, the residence was described as 'a house of modern villa design, built out of stone and brick'. It had nine rooms, with vernadahs and accessory offices, an attractive front garden, a four-acre orchard, large stabling facilities, a woolshed and machinery shed. Today the stone and brickwork have been rendered, but the basic appearance of the building remains the same, with some additions, e.g. a closed in portion of the front verandah. The facade of the building is symmetrical with two gabled wings linked by a long central section. Verandahs supported by timber posts run the length of the front elevation. The timbered gables appear to be originals as seen in a 1927 photograph. One of the outbuildings is a substantial stone barn, built around 1888 by stonemason Thomas Riley, for the then owner, Frederick Watts. The barn has double wooden doors, and a series of four arched windows. The roof is corrugated iron.
The first owner of Location 7 (1,500 acres) in 1846 was George Leake. It would seem that George Maxwell, who was contacted to transport the mail between Kojonup and Perth in 1852, utilised a cottage built on the property. Thomas Chipper, who later gained the contract for the entire Albany/Perth mail service, is thought to have occupied the cottage for a time. He developed a staging post at Namarillup (the original name for the area) and he appears to have built a residence, the core of the present building. Subsequent owners of the property were Alexander Moir, and Frederick Watts, who added to the house, and made substantial repairs. He also commissioned Thomas Riley to build the stone barn. A subsequent owner in 1904 was James McHenry Clark, who added to the north end of the homestead and renamed the property "Glenlossie". Charles Know Ross purchased the property in 1909. By then it was a substantial 9-roomed residence. Subsequent owners were Leonard Raymond Wilkie, Charles Herman Neumann, Walter Hawkins Penny (1926), and the Bell brothers (1943). In 1949 the property became part of a CSIRO research station, and in 1968 the Elverton Pastoral Co Pty Ltd purchased the homestead block. By 1989 this block had been further subdivided, separating the homestead residence with the shearing shed/barn, with B.P. Rourke retaining the homestead portion.

Maybenup has historic signficance as one of the oldest properties in the shire, and particularly for its association with the De Bernales and Robertson families.
One of the oldest properties in the shire, originally an estate of over 10,000 acres selected in 1839 by Messrs Samson and Lewis. In 1900 ownership transferred to Mr J Foulkes then to Silverthorne and De Bernales, but Mrs B De Bernales bought out Silverthorne. In 1924, De Bernales put Maybenup on the market, and Duncan Robertson had hoped to purchase but didn’t make the payment. AS a result, the property remained with De Bernales, but Robertson was employed as manager and is strongly connected to the place. When he retired he moved to Kojonup. Robertson was a well-known local identity having helped form the Kojonup Bush Fire Control Organisation in 1940 after a fire burnt through Maybenup. He also planted the gums beside the railway line Kojonup school students used to have excursions to Maybenup to experience farming. In 1951, after the death of De Bernales, the property was the subject of a writ issued by her daughters Betty (Trethowan) and Daphne (Faye). As the property was now divided by Albany Hwy, Betty desired that the east and west sections of the property be divided equally with her sister, but Daphne wanted the property sold whole.

The Royal Hotel has aesthetic and historical significance. It is located in a prominent position on Albany Highway. As the third hotel to have been established Kojonup, it has been an important social meeting place as well as a venue for community events and meetings.
The Royal Hotel, situated near the top of the hill t the northern end of the town, as an attractive facade, dated 1926. A verandah, under a separate roof, supported by timber pillars and balustrading, extends along most of the front elevation. A decorative parapet wall bears the inscription, 'Royal Hotel, 1926'. The hotel complex has been built in stages at different time periods. The original building was a timber bar room (1887), and the 1887 quarters for the original owner and licensee were built in a crescent formation around the bar. Subsequent additions, built in 1926, complete the complex as it presents today. A roof has been added to link the original timber section with the rest.
The Royal Hotel, also referred to as "Top Pub", was the third to be established in Kojonup in 1887. The original owner was William Cornwall, who initially lived on the premises. Later the Cornwalls built a gracious home opposite the hotel. Cornwall had significant business interests in the district. The Hotel was significant as an early meeting place for early Kojonup settlers and for travellers. Records show that the Road Board rented a room there for meetings in 1891, and the inaugural meeting of the Returned Soldiers Association (RSA- later RSL) was held there in 1919. Alongside the Hotel was the Theatre Royal, a tin hall built alongside the hall by Cornwall, for dances and large social functions.
Integrity - High Authenticity - Medium - most of the original fabric remains intact, however there are been various modifications.

The place has social and historic significance as one of the earliest garages established in Kojonup by well-known local Fred Thornbury. The place has landmark value as a substantial garage building and situated on the main street on the top of the hill.
Twin gabled brick and iron garage building with profiled metal sheeting in gable, reflecting a simple industrial aesthetic.
Originally established by Fred Thornbury. In the 1950s it became Watson's Garage (Proprietor George Watson). It was the local RAC agent, had a tow truck and was also agent for Chrysler, BMC (including the Leyland P76) and, for a while, the NSU Wankel rotary. The garage in the 60s and 70s was a weatherboard construction and had petrol pumps on a forecourt on the southern side of the building on Albany Hwy. The little one-room office by the petrol pumps that was once there has now gone. The northern garage bay was, from May 1968, used by Kojonup Tyre Service (Proprietor Geoff McManus)

The Memorial Hall has aesthetic, historical and social significance. It is a substantial and finely-executed hall building in the Inter-War Georgian Revival style, and being a main centrepiece of the townsite. Its connection to the memory of those who fought in the armed services in the WWI, an association that continued with the subsequent wars, is an important memorial for the past and current community. The hall is also a place where the community meets, comes together and celebrates important events and milestones.
The Memorial Hall in Kojonupis located close to the road in a prominent position on the eastern side of Albany Highway, on the southside of the Shire Administration Centre. It is an imposing brick structure, with a wide arched entrance, and a partial parapet wall over the entrance, bearing the inscription, '1926 Memorial Hall Kojonup'. The facade is symmetrical, with three windows on either side of the entrance. The brick plinth of the building is graded to accommodate the sloping ground, and the severity of the red brick is softened by rendered string courses and the moulded architraves at the top of the windows. Inside, the ceiling of the foyer is of particular artistic significance. A second storey section is constructed of timber.
The hall was built in 1925-6 to commemorate those who lost their lives in WWI. The architect was F. J. Coote and the builder, A Thomson. The decision to build the hall was a controversial one at the time, and eventually the issue was decided conclusively by a local referendum. It was mainly due to the energetic fundraising undertaken by the local RSL that the hall was built and furnished. The foundation stone was laid by JG Findlay on 11 November 1925, and the hall was oficially opened by Major-General Sir JJ Talbot-Hobbs CMG, KCMC, VD on Friday 20 August 1926. The hall continues to be an important community facility for Kojonup residence.
Integrity - high Authencity - high Some additions to the rear and new council facilities to the north but not detracting from the original hall building.

Balgarup and its remaining buildings have historic significance as being one of the earliest areas of land to be taken up in Kojonup, a major factor being its proximity to the river, and associated with important early settlers: Symers, Spencer and Egerton- Warburton. The remnant buildings are indicative of the substantial homestead property that Balgarup was in its prime, and the significance of the agricultural development of Kojonup in the mid 19th century. The place contains the graves of Joseph Spencer and his two young sons Henry and Hugh.
There are two residences. The larger one is in semi-ruinous condition. It is a large building with rendered and painted brick external walls, sprawling iron gabled and hipped roof with shingles evident under the iron sheeting. A deep wrap-around verandah supported by timber pillars is almost collapsed. The other smaller residence is in better condition although still poor. It is constructed of handmade (mud) bricks partially rendered to the original section and cement blocks used for the additions. It has a low pitched broken back hipped roof forming a front verandah on two sides. The property also contains an old barn which is a rectangular form with a hipped roof, constructed of random rubble stone and bricks, the courses bricks from lintel upwards and appears to be a later addition. The old barn is semi-renovated and habitable. There is also a U-shaped shearing shed, constructed of random rubble stone and the roof is missing. Scattered rocks and rubble indicate the remains of a former coach house. There is a granite rock acknowledging the graves of the Spencers on the property. A large granite rock is installed as a memorial with a plaque detailing the Spencers who were buried on the property.
The area around the Balgarup river appeared most promising to the early explorers and surveyors. In 1840 Thomas Lyall Symers, a former sea captain, became the first leaseholder of Kojonup Location 1, known as Balgarup and built the first residence on this land. Plans were made for a townsite nearby. Unfortunately, the area was found to he infested with poisonous plants which killed large numbers of stock. Symers abandoned the house and property around 1840. In 1860 the Colonial Secretary's Office opened up the land on the Balgarup River comprising 640 acres open to purchase or lease in 1861. By 1862 Joseph Spencer was established at Balgarup (also called Bailyup?). Joseph was son of Richard Spencer, the first Resident Magistrate of Albany (and established Old Farm Strawberry Hill, Albany). Spencer built a new house (15m x 9m) as well as six other buildings, and a flour mill, a fence and yards. There also remained the chimney of Symers original house. In 1861 S R Toovey applied for a Road-Side Inn licence at Balgarup, on the Balgarup property, and which was parochially referred to as 'the pub paddock'. In 1881 Spencer advertised for fencing of his property Pastoral Lease 8003 known as Bailyup containing 10,000 acres. In 1891, Spencer died and in 1894 Balgarup was handed to his nephew Augustus Egerton-Warburton. Joseph Spencer and two of his young sons, Henry and Hugh, were buried on the property. It remained in the Egerton Warburton family until 1928. In 1928, Balgarup was bought by Major Gilbert Lewis of South Australia. The pile of rocks near the road is believed to be Toovey's Inn/Store.
