Statement of Significance

died two weeks after laying the foundation stone. Statement of significance: The place demonstrates a way of life which continues to be practiced. It demonstrates an association with many community organisations, and members there-of, in Hyden. It is integral within the townscape and character of Hyden.

Physical Description

The painted concrete block structure has a domestic hipped roof with a skillion extension over the central front entry doors. The brick and column piers supporting the entry roof are similar in design to the hall entry pillars. The roof has been reclad with long sheets of colourbond custom orb metal cladding. The windows which flank the entry door, are aluminium framed sliding windows which have replaced timber framed louvre windows. The rear room of the building is a large well appointed kitchen opening into the "supper" room, into the hall.

History

The East Hyden branch of the CWA was formed at a meeting at Sharp's Corner in 1934. The same year the Hyden branch of the CWA was formed. The rest room in Hyden was designed to serve many community needs. Mrs Thelma Watson, the President of CWA, laid a stone on 14 December 1949. The £1500 cost of the place was raised entirely by fundraising in the Hyden community, and public subscription. Mrs Watson had been a driving force for the establishment of the CWA rooms, and unfortunately died two weeks after laying the foundation stone.
