Values

The place is a landmark along the Burtville-Merolia Road in a sparse rural landscape.

The place has associations with the development of the goldfields region from the 1890s and is representative of other towns in the area that had a short-lived history and now appear as ‘ghost towns’.

The place is one of only two remnants of the former Burtville gold mining townsite.

The place is representative of a number of ghost mining towns in the goldfield's region, of which the remnant fabric is becoming increasingly rare due to various reasons.

Physical Description

The ruin is the only remains in a former gold mining townsite and is located on the corner of two former roads. The ruin is of stone construction. It is the ground floor truncated corner element of a former hotel building and is the only standing element in the stone ruins of the former building. The footprint of the building is discernible and a stone cellar. The truncated corner element has quoined openings with a decorative keystone. The ruin is structurally unstable, and the mortar is fretted.

History

Gold was discovered in the area in 1897 by Billy Frost and J. Tregurtha. A town grew very quickly around the find with one of the first buildings constructed being the hotel. By 1901, the town had been laid out and businesses in the town included a cordial factory, stores and a Union Bank. The town was originally named ‘Merolia’, but original residents referred to the place as ‘Burtville’ after the Warden of the Mount Margaret Goldfield, Mr. Alfred Earle Burt. In 1902 the town was re-gazetted Burtville at the request of the town’s Progress Association. By 1904 the town had two banks, two hotels, stores, a school, a butcher, a baker, a news agency and a police station. The population at this time was approximately 400 people. The town was short-lived with the local fields mined up within twenty years. By 1916, the Inspector of Police reported that the town was ‘almost deserted’ with approximately 45 people still living in the town itself. By 1921, there were only 14 people recorded in the town including Laura Sangster at the Black Swan Hotel. Very little information has yet been found about the history of the hotel, although it appears that the Burtville Arch may have originally been known as the Black Swan Hotel. As with other goldmining towns it is likely that when Burtville became deserted materials were scavenged from existing buildings, relocated and reused in the construction of other buildings in the goldfields area. With the increase in tourism in the goldfield's region, the place has become a popular stop in the goldfields ghost town tour.

Statement of Significance

The old gaol, together witht he adjacent police station ad former sergeant's quarters from an historic precinct, that contributes to the aesthetic qualities of the landscape. The place clearly demonstrates the way of maintaining law and order that developed during that time. The conditions of life ina gaol of that period are still obvious. The place has rarity value as one of the few remaining and intact examples of it's type in Western Australia.

Physical Description

Place comprises three cells of equal size, and an enclosed exercise yard. The small building has a skillion roof that covers the three cells. Louvered vents, across the top of the wall on the south elevation, and metal roof vents enable air circulation through the cells. An exercise yard, that is open to the elements, abuts the cell block on the south side. The yard has a concrete floor and is enclosed by cgi sheets. The yard has a timber and iron beams over which is covered with wire mesh. The cells have timber floors troughout and timber lined iron beams over mesh which is covered with wire mesh. Cell 3 has recently been relined (date unknown). he cells retain original iron gates and timber doors and iron grilles with timber hach doors. Much of the cgi cladding is loose and timber joinery is termite damaged. The canopy of a tree in the exercise yard is causing damage to the building. The graffiti covered iron has historic value and should be retained. Loose sheets should be refixed and not replaced.

History

Precinct comprising fmr gaol, police station and police sergeant's house. As with the fmr Courthouse , the police station was relocated from Mt Margaret to Laverton in 1899 (Battye Libraray, Research Notes, 226, p. 1). The first policeman at Laverton was Constable Charles Harris who commence his duties, according to the Police Occurance Book, on 18th September 1899. (ibid). The first police precinct was temporary and comprised mainly of tents and the first prisoners were chained to a log (ibid). The community was soon petitioning for a more permanent structure, in particular a gaol. Town Lots 47 and 48 were reserved for the police precinct on August 1900 (GG 03/08/1900, p 2,805). On 29th May 1901, almost a year later, Mr Mackesy accepted the tender of construction of the Laverton police station, police quarters and a gaol at a cost of 690 pounds. In November, when the wood and iron cell was ready for occupation there were two policemen at Laverton, Constables Ansell and Houston (Laverton Mercury 22/06/1901, p 2). In 1905, additions to the police station amounted to 108 pounds (GG, 16/05/1902 p 1,241). In 1908, a verandah costing 63/5/0 pounds was alson added (GG 11/12/1908, p 3,392). Further additions and renovations were made to the police precinct over the decades until the new police quarters and office were built by Mr Ernest Best, in 1934, at a cost of 1,153 pounds (GG 20/04/1934, p 555). Forty years later, Mr Julius Elischer, built an entirely new police precinct in the newly designed town of Laverton and the old buildings were relocated to different sites, (State Records Office, AN 7/21, Public Works Department, Acc 1608, No. 1550). A $20,000 Tourism Development Grant has recently been received and the conservation of these buildings is in progress.

Statement of Significance

The place is a reminder of the early settlement and a way of law and order in Laverton.

Physical Description

The building is raised on timber stumps and is covered by a hipped roof, with metal louvered gablet vents, that extends to cover the encircling verandah. The roof is supportd on galvanised iron columns. The building exterior features double hung window sashes divided into 4 panes. A servery window is located at the northern end of the east elevation. Many windows include wire reinforced glass. The interior is lined with fibro cement and ripple iron. There are timber floors and skirting boards throughout. The old courtroom retains it's timber podium, The verandah on the west elevation has been partially enclosed to accommodate toilets. Toilet cisterns are exposed on the outer wall and are protected by a lean-to roof. A concrete paved court on the western side of the building is protected by a pergola covered in shade cloth. The verandah of the northern elevation is partially enclosed. Concrete pads, for the preparation of a structure over, are north of hte building.

History

In 1899, when the township of Mt Margaret was dismantled to the new location of Laverton, many of it's buildings including the courthouse, were relocated there. The first Warden's Court in Laverton was located in a temporary structure opposite it's first building, Logan's Store. (Laverton Mercury 16/09/1899, p2) On 8th December 1899, construction of the Wardem's Court was put out to tender in the Government Gazette (GG 08/12/1899, p 4,078). In January 1900, Mr P McInnes won the contract for 849/8/0 pounds, (GG 26/01/1900, p281). In June the Courthouse was completed and a detailed description of the original building was published in the Laverton Mercury: "The courtroom is 28ft x 18ft x 14ft with jarrahs flooring and footings. Green tinted walls of fluted iron forms a striking contrast with the fittings. A barrier, constructed of solid jarrah separates the bench and the barrister's portion of the room from that of the hearers where judging from the small space allowed them, have not been favourably considered. The warden's room is 12ft x 14ft and contains a store... the registrar's room is very commodius being 25ft x 14ft... the draftsman's room, 12ft x 12ft is divided off from the registrar's compartment by a polished jarrah screeen... A 10ft verandah runs around the building which is well supplied with water storage." (Laverton Mercury 30/06/1900, p 2). When Laverton was redesigned in the mid 1970's, the Courthouse was moved to the new recreation grounds to be used as a change room. (News of the North 25/09/1974, p 2). Over the decades the buildings had deteriorated with neglect and vandalism. Therefore it was decided by the Laverton Shire Council in 1996, to spend $15,000 to renovate the old Warden's Court. It is planned to establish a museum and craft centre in the premises after restoration work had returned the corrugated iron building to it's former glory. (Kalgoorlie Miner 18/04/1996, p7).

The interior comprises three bedrooms, a living area and kitchen. The interior is lined with timber boards below dado level and fibro-cement above dado level. The floors are timber throughout, now covered. The hallway features a delicately carved timber frieze. The laundry enclosure is positioned to avoid covering an existing window. Over the last five years, the place has undergone general maintenance and repainting to the verandah. Original tounge and groove balustrading has been replaced with cross bracing. Evidence of the original pattern remains near the entrance.

Values

• The lock up, the police station and the police quarters together form a group of buildings in compatible styles and materials, which form a significant precinct and landmark in the Laverton townsite.
• The place has associations with the development of the Laverton townsite in the 1890s and 1900s which occurred as a result of the discovery of gold in the area in the 1890s, and in particular is associated with the need to provide law and order services in the area.
• The place has the potential to reveal information about the provision of police services in remote areas and associated policies and treatment of prisoners.
• The lock up and police station are representative of buildings associated with the provision of law and order services in remote areas in the early 1900s.
• The place is representative as a intact group of police buildings in a country town in the goldfields.
• The police station appears to be a rare form of this type of building.
• The lock up appears to be a standard plan and was also used for the lock ups at Leonora.

Physical Description

The MI states that the police station was relocated from Mt Margaret in 1899 with the first police constable commencing work on 18 September 1899. Town Lots 47 and 48 were reserved for a police precinct in August 1900. In 1901, a contract was awarded for permanent buildings, including police station, gaol and quarters, to Mr Mackesy at a cost of £690. Police stables were built in 1902. In 1905 and again in 1908, work was carried out to the police station, which included the erection of a verandah (1908). A new residence for the police sergeant, which incorporated an office, was constructed by Mr. Ernest Best in 1934. In the mid 1970s, a new police complex was built, which may have resulted in the relocations of the former complex (to be confirmed). In the mid 1990s,a tourism development grant was awarded to the Shire for the conservation of the former police complex into a tourist precinct. In 2002, the former quarter’s opened as a museum.

In 1905, additions tot he police station amounted to 108 pounds (GG 16/05/1902, p 1,241).

The continued use of hte place, first as a school and later as a hall, illustrates the importance of the place as a community facility.

Physical Description

The building is raised on stumps and has a small medium-pitched gabled roof that featured a tall, slender, corbelled brick chimney (top portion missing). The roof ridge features metal vents. The front verandah is protected by a lean-to roof, cgi clad. Metal louvered screens give further protection to the front facade (west elevation). Sections of the screen have eben repalced by cgi. Brick walls thay form the chimney flue are evident on the south-west corner of the building. The verandah on the north-west corner of the building has been enclosed and now forms the entrance to the building. New aluminium sliding window frames have been installed tot he front and rear elevations.

History

By 1900, there were enough children in Laverton to warrant a school. Unfortunately, the number was too small for the Education Department to justify the establishment of a state school. As a result, the Wesleyan minister Rev SR Rooney opened the first school in his own camp on 14th May 1900 for approximately 14 children (Laverton Mercury 28/04/1900). The Laverton State School was officially opened in the Wesley Church on 15th April 1901, with Mr mark Graham as head teacher (State Records Office, AN 4517, Acc 1653, No 1155/00). The school closed the following month, due to poor attendance (GG 16/06/1901, p 2,515). However it reopened in October with Mr Patrick Brennan as head teacher and with 22 students (Education Dept Annual Report, 1901, p 23). It was a half-time school though in 1902 it became a provisional full-time school until 1903 when it was downgraded to a half-time school again, this time with Burtvile (Education Dept Annual Report, 1902-1903, p 15). In 1905, the Laverton School was granted full-time status again. During this time, the community was petitioning the Education Department to erect a school building (Laverton Mercury 11/01/1901, p 2). Their demands were granted in 1906 when Mr Alfred Eade was commissioned to build an iron and wood one-room school for 456/11/11 pounds (GG 09/02/1906, p 452). It was completed on 24th may 1906 and two years later the teacher's quarters were also built (State Records Office, AN 45/17, Acc 1653, No 5099/07). In 1916, a pavillion clasroom was added for 270 poundsand also used as a junior school but it was later sold to another school when the students numbers dropped (GG 17/03/1916, p 454). Over the decades, numerous alterations and additions were made to the school, but most importantly was the addition of a verandah on the northern side of the school for 51 pounds (State Records Office, AN 55/77, Ac 1653, No. 1907/29). During the 1950's, the small school room became overcrowded with two teachers in one room. This led to the junior class being located at first in the neighbouring RSL Hall and later in the Courthouse, which was being used only sporadically for legal matters (State Records Office, AN 24, Cons 3896, No 2012/52). In 1974, when the town layout was being redesigned by Western Mining Corporation and the State and Local Government, a new primary school, junior high school and kindergarten were built at a cost of over $0.5 million. The original school building is now being used by the Roman Catholic Church as a hall.

Statement of Significance

The place is a landmark on what was once the main street, and as the only two storey structure in the town it contributes to the aesthetic and historic character of the Laverton.

Physical Description

The two-storey building addresses the easern aspect of Laver Place; the original main street alignment of the town. The building is in Flemish Bond Style and the front elevation has a rendered decorative parapet with a central triangular pediment that hides a hipped roof behind. A verandah and balcony extend across the northern facade and the front facade by a lean-to roof supported on galvanised iron columns (not original). The balcony is protected by balustrading of corrugated iron sheets (not original). Windows are double-hung sashes. The interior comprises bar, dining, kitchen and office facilities, on the lower level, accommodation on the upper level and a cellar. The interior of the original building retains some pressed metal ceilings, smll plaster ceiling roses, a simple arch on square pillasters and a carved timber stair. The interior retains few original fixtures and fittings. The internal doors are of various styles and ages. The timber floors on the upper level have been covered and the archway filled in with a door. The bathrooms ahave been upgraded, the date of the upgrading is unknown. External doorways have been bricked-up, possibly remnants of removed accretions. Fenestration treatment on the front elevation has been altered; however, the original design is evident. A maintenance programme has resulted in the interior remaining in good condition. The building has been extended to the north with a single storey addition that adjoins the side balcony. In the early 1980's, a bar and lounge were added to the rear. The rear addition is clad in textured weatherboards that resembles woodgrain. Adjacent to the hotel is a single storey brick building that accommodates a bottleshop. The bottleshop is a relatively new structure and has little significance. Between the hotel and the bottleshop is a partially covered court/beer garden and BBQ area. Overall the place is in good condition with the exception of the balconies which are in poor condition.

History

George Ormish was first granted his Publican General License in March 1900 for his Royal Hotel in Laverton, (Laverton Mercury 10/03/1900, p.3). He applied for another one in May 1902, and was granted it by Warden Burt a month later. (Laverton Mercury 17/05/1902, p.2) This allowed him to serve as proprietor at his new establishment, The Palace Hotel. The Hotel, located on Lot 2 in Laver Street, was opened on 1st July and was described as; largest building of it's kind or any other kind this side of Menzies. Mr WE Robertson was the architect and Mr C Arnott built the hotel of brick. The front bar is 28ft x 20ft, the main entrance hall is 8ft wide and arcaded. Behind the bar are two parlours, one is for the general public and one is for the exclusive use of visitors and boarders. Off the main entrance hall there is a staircase hall, by which the access can be gained tot he dining room. The staircase is made of beautiful jarrah. Off the dining room is the storeroom and serving pantry, access to the kitchen can be gained through the latter; the kitchen is 16ft x 18ft. Upstairs there is a private parlour and saloon bar fitted with french casement windows, which open to a 12ft balcony. There are eight large rooms, three of which open up to a large balcony and a bathroom where hot and cold baths may be obtained. There is also a staircase...there is good stabling accommodation and a roomy yard. It is intended to erect a large hall forthwith in place of the two shops at present adjoining the hotel. (Laverton Mercury 05/07/1902, p.2) In 1907, the hotel changed hands to William H Robbins who owned the hotal for over ten years. (Wises Post Office Directory 1907) It then changed hands a few more times untilt he Leahy family bought the hotel in 1918. It remianed in the family for the next 50 years until Done Leahy sold it to Tin Creek Mining. (West Australian 11/02/1970, p.4) Four years later it was bought by mr Bill Carlin who planned to extend the building. He built a cocktail lounge with a small dance floor, two motel and a long, 120ft bar. (West Australian 17/07/1974, p.7) Around 1985, the Palace Hotel was renamed the Desert Inn Hotel. (Telephoen Directory 17/07/19074, p.7) In 1999, the place continues to be used as a hotel.

Physical Description

A single-storey brick, stucco and corrugated iron building, showing influences of Federation Free Classical style. Includes an enclosed carriageway. The place is a single storey building L-shaped building constructed to the alignment of the original main street Now Laver Place. The front elevation is rendered brick built on a bull nosed plinth. The front elevation has a parapet that conceals hipped roofs with gablet vents. The building's exterior features square pilasters that divide the facade into bays. The pilasters continue to the parapet and are capped with geometric motifs. The central feature is a triangular pediment that emphasises the principal entrance. The window openings are articulated by heavily moulded semi-circular hoods, surrounds and sills. The treatment is repeated around the door openings but with square pilasters that support the hoods are their springing points. A large semi-circular opening at the northern end of the facade accommodated the carriage store, now sealed by cgi. Windows are divided onto three lights, now protected by grilles. It is believed that the principal doorway retains original joinery but with new doors. The interior has; timber floors throughout, except the carriage store which was covered with concrete; pressed metal ceilings with metal roses; plastered walls which retain original vents; and simple arches in the hallway one of which has been partially bricked up. The cellar is an extant. Physical evidence remains of the interior openings. In the 1970's, the carriage store was divided by a brick partition and a chiller room accommodated in therear section. At this time, the interior, north wall of hte carriage room was totally covered with paintings which reflected the mineral exploration of the times, Further alterations were carried out in 1985, when the building was converted from a cafe into a newsagent. Lightweight partitions were installed and the carriage store ceiling was lined. The walls of the carriage store have exposed piping and electrical wiring. In the 1970's, the site was enclosed by rough rendered wall that has a painted mural on the internal face. The rear courtyard has been flood lit and covered with concrete and over the years, used as a recreational space, including rollerskating rink and outdoor function area. In 1986, the place was purchased by catering company Nationwide Food service and converted to a newsagency in the late 1980's. It incorporated agencies for Goldfields Air Services, Westpac, United Credit, Lotto products, Greyhound Bus and Interflora. In 1995, the place was purchased by J Carter following the downsizing of the town when WMC ceased mining operations at Lancefield, Beasley Creek, South Windarra and Windarra. The place operated as a boarding house for a short time during the late 1930s.

History

This building was constructed for Richard Lancaster as the Hotel Australia in 1901 (Laverton Mercury 27/04/1901, p 2). In Twentieth Century Impressions, the hotel is a described as ;"a fine brick structure and completely dwarfs the other edifices in it's vicinity", (Thiel, 1901, p 658). The architect was Mr WE Robertson who spared no expense in designing the building of burnt brick with cement dressings, Contracts were awarded to Mssrs Judge and Stamp for the woodwork and Mr J Edwards for the brickwork. The bricks were made locally by Messrs Baker and Company. The front bar was 18ft x 18ft and features turned pillars with mirror backs. The saloon bar was of similar design but connected to the billiard room (19ft x 24ft) and smoking room. The dining room (19ft x 24ft) had lofty, decorated ceilings. The pantry, storeroom and kitchen were also of considerable size. There were eight bedrooms all 12ft x 10ft, excluding the bridal chamber which was 14ft 12ft and all were furnished in an elaborate style with baths available. A large archway was built of brick and formed part of hte architecture at he front of the hotel and was used for vehicles to access the stables at the rear (Laverton Mercury 27/04/1907 p 2). A few months later, Lancaster completed a large awning at the back of hte hotel which was capable of holding 250 people and it was also lit by acetylen gas. as there was no hall available for public use at this time, this extension with it's own private entrance became a popular place for concerts and the like (Laverton Mercury 24/08/1901, p 2). In January 1902, Clyde Ballantyne purchased the Hotel Australia and this led to a succession of owners over the years (Laverton Mercury 25/01/1902, p 2). Up until 1902, when the railway arrived in Laverton, coaches operated by Cobb & Co. were the main mode of transport to Laverton from the railway at Menzies. The coach company used Hotel Australia as their base and his was probably why the place was renamed Coach House( West Australian;"News of the North", 18/08/1976 p. 8). In 1914, the place stopped being used for the needs of travellers and it suffered further indignation when it was delicensed and closed in 1926-27 (Wises Post Office Directory 1926-27). after that it was used for varying periods, as an aerated water factory, guest house and garage. Then it was left unoccupied for 28 years. In 1968, Mr Ken Shirley (the discoverer of nickel at Mt Windarra) used it as his base. In 1970, Frank and Lil Pearce, with funds by Don Leahy, extensively renoc=vated the run-down building and converted it to a restaurant. Six years later it became a dining room, milk-bar and amusement centre (West Australian;"News of the North 1/08/1976 p.8). Around 1983, it became the Coach Houe Inn until 1995, when it was purchased by Mr Carter and it was converted inot a newsagency and shop (Central Eastern Telephone Directories 1982-1997).

Values

The place is rare as a site containing remnants of a nickel mine in Western Australia.

The place is a significant cultural environment informing of a considerable mining presence as evidenced by the monolithic concrete remains and steel frame headframe that are landmarks in the otherwise sparse goldfields landscape.

The place represents the only tangible remains of the extraordinary history of the nickel find at the site. The Poseidon led stock boom was a significant event in mining history in Australia and internationally, and resulted in the establishment of the site of the Windarra Nickel project in the early 1970s.

The place has the potential to inform of scientific and mining practices that may no longer be undertaken.

The place is representative of a nickel treatment project that has been all but removed from the site, with only monolithic concrete elements and a steel headframe to inform of its presence.

The place is associated with the 1970s economic boom, resulting in the regeneration of the building stock of St Georges Terrace.

Physical Description

‘Windarra heritage trail comprises a gravel access road from the north side, after traversing the east side of the site. Another gravel track to the west, accesses the discovery drill hole, and the office complex (not shown on the map). The office complex is an expansive single storey concrete structure with evidence of an extensive high tech fitout (including communication tower), as well as a considerable number of offices, meeting rooms, extensive male and female change rooms and ablution facilities, and recreation areas at the rear (north). Located immediately adjacent on the east side of the office facility is an expansive concrete area where a number of transportable facilities were located. Adjacent to the front entry of the office complex there is a row of steel framed carports. When accessing the orientation point of the heritage walk trail, from the north to the main carpark, a number of concrete frames are evident as support elements for conveyors between the mine entry portal (north) and the crusher ruins that are also evident to the south. The crusher ruins are a dominant concrete element on the site. Site amenities for visitors have been located within the visual scope of the remains of the crusher. The steel framed headframe, also west of the pedestrian trail is dominant on the site. The remains of the fine ore bins are also reinforced concrete structures. As indicated by the interpretive text on the site, these elements were merely support structures for enormous bins that were located above them. Further south on the trail are the remains of the ball mills, forming a linear element, east west across the site. The reinforced concrete elements are seriously deteriorated. South of the ball mills is a single concrete frame atop a rise. East of the ball mills is a square reinforced concrete form that is the remains of the gold vault. On the east side of the road access to the site, is the diamond drill mast, a simple vertical steel structure. It is located on the west side of the expansive west embankment wall of the waste ponds. The portal entry to the underground mine and the site of the accommodation village, 0.5 kilometres further north, were not accessed. From a short distance, there are no obvious remains of the power station that is indicated on the heritage trail.

History

‘In April 1969, Ken Shirley reported to his employer Poseidon NL, he had located nickel bearing rocks just south of Mount Windarra, and had pegged some 40 claims in the area. What followed was a run on Poseidon shares felt around the world. Although the ore body was not as rich as first thought, it was good enough to set up a viable mine at Mount Windarra, with production beginning in 1974.’ ‘Windarra was an underground mine, although where the ore body reached the surface, some open cut mining was carried out. The discovery of an adequate water supply near Windarra meant that a processing plant could be built at the site, thus avoiding the cartage of the bulk material to Kalgoorlie. The large workforce was initially housed at the mine site and a village was built complete with a shop, post office and swimming pool. Up to 400 people were accommodated at one stage. However, a decision was made to house families in Laverton and to keep the village for single workers. Laverton was redeveloped for this purpose.’ ‘Ownership and management changed over the years. The Mount Windarra plant was de-commissioned in 1994. It took two years to remove all the plant and equipment. The structures were demolished and sold as scrap and the ground was then cleared of all debris, ripped and top soiled. Seed was collected from local native plants and sown in the wet winter on 1996. Trees were planted by the school children of Laverton. The headframe and some massive foundations are all that are left to mark this mining site.’ Photographs on the trail document and interpretive panels on the heritage trail evidence that extensive change has taken place since the mine site was decommissioned in 1994. Apparently it took 2 years to remove most of the mining plant and equipment, although the offices were only abandoned as recently as 2-3 years ago. The only remains on the site are predominantly reinforced concrete elements that have no recyclable or reuse value. The site was revegetated, further removing evidence of the processes and structures that were in place throughout the site during its active life.

Statement of Significance

The place is the largest timber structure in Laverton. The place has representative value of a common design for residential buildings at that time. The substantial size of hte residence is an indication of the status fo hte staion master in society at the time.

Physical Description

The building is in a lawned and garden setting. The substantial single-storey residence is encircled by a concrete verandah (originally softwood) under a broken-back roof supported on square timber posts. The prominent roof is weatherboard clad on the gable walls and features a corbelled brick chimney. The exterior features double-hung sash windows divided into 12 panes by slim glazing bars. The fornt facade issymmetrical about a cemtral entrance. The interior has timber floors thorughout and the walls and ceilings are lined with ripple iron. The place retains two outbuildings; a wash house and a plant room (electrical). In the 1950's, the verandah floor was replaced with concrete. The gutters have been replaced with wire. In the mid 1960's, new gum trees were planted and a large mulberry and passionfruit tree were removed from the garden.

History

The railway arrived in Laverton in 1903 (Wises Post Office Directory 1903). That same year the Malcolm to Laverton railway contract was won by Joseph Timms for 40,141/10/9 pounds (State Records Office, Ace 260/CCE, AN 2621, no 149/03). It involved not only the construction of the railway stations but also the building of the Station Master's House. The wood brick and iron house with a woolshed and latrine was erected at a cost of 300 pounds (State Records Office, Acc 260/CCE, AN 2621, no 149/03). The first staion master was Percy Edwards and he was followed by many others (Wises Post Office Directory 1905, p 193). The last train from Laverton was in 1957 and the closure of hte line was greatly mourned by the townsfolk who laid a wreath of flowers on that final train (Destinations 1990, p 12). Since then, the fmr Station Master's House has been used as a private residence.
