Statement of Significance

The hall is of considerable significance as the only visible reminder of a the community and settlement at Bonnie Rock which developed in the depression years. It has associations with the generations of the Bonnie Rock community and has a 'sense of place' for the events and special occasions that have taken place.

Physical Description

Timber framed and clad with weatherboard dado and asbestos. The gable roof is clad with corrugated iron. The interior has jarrah dado wall beneath the unlined remainder of the walls. The exterior weatherboards have been painted in more recent years over the original oiled boards.

History

In 1932, the townsite of Bonnie Rock was declared, after the railway line opened in 1931. A store, sports ground and reservoir were established, and the settlement hoped Bonnie Rock would be the centre of the new Mukinbudin Roads Board District. In 1933/34, the area boomed with 100,000 bags of wheat at the siding. Moves were made to construct a district hall. At that time, settlers took turns in hosting socials and dances, and after a boarding house was established in town, it became the venue, but pressure was on for a community venue. In 1933, the Progress association had opened a hall fund account, and fundraising in the community took the form of cropping, sports days and dances. In 1934 the Roads Board raised a loan and built the 30' x 40' hall, after it became obvious that Bonnie Rock would not be the administrative centre of the district. The hall was opened on 30 November 1935, by the MLA F Warner. It was the focus point of the district with dances, meetings, church services, Christmas trees, and 'Heron's Talkies', as well as being the venue for the school. By 1937, the kitchen and ladies room were added on, and a 6 light 'Wizard' lighting plant was installed. In 1938, the district nurse used the hall for consultations. The same year, a gramophone and record collection were bought for the hall. By 1944, the Bonnie Rock townsite had no residents, and the hall remained as the district focus, as it does in the late 1990s.

Statement of Significance

The place is significant as a source of sustaining settlement in the area.

Physical Description

Originally, six and a half acres natural rock catchment area (storage for 600,000 gallons) and concrete storage tank.

History

The local story is that the sandalwood cutters camped at the rock, and shot the first tew rabbits seen in the district, calling the rock Bunny Rock which over time became Bonnie Rock. In January 1930, plans marked 'very urgently required in the new settlement' were submitted to PWD for a water reservoir at Bonnie Rock reserve, to ease the strain on Donkey Soak. The existing well at Bonnie Rock was not adequate with the proposed eastward extension of the railway from Kulja to Bonnie Rock. Originally the tank was for agricultural purposes only. The reservoir was completed in January 1931, in time for the railway which reached Bonnie Rock in April that year. A weekly train service ran to Bonnie Rock, and it was estimated that of the 600,000 gallons stored in the reservoir, annually, railways needed 350,000 gallons and the settlers the remainder.

Statement of Significance

The Sprigg house is significant as the only remaining settler's dwelling of the period in the Bonnie Rock area.

Physical Description

Mud brick cottage with external cement render and a cement chimney. The timber framed and corrugated iron clad roof (with louvres) is still in place, covering the dwelling and the surrounding earthen floor verandahs. The dwelling still has some of the timber floors in place.

History

Built at the beginning of the depression, when the railway was still just a plan, the settlers were courageous pioneers. The place was built from materials found nearby on the site, except the roofing iron and cement. In the early days, Mr & Mrs Will Sprigg and their youngest daughter Elsie slept in the house, and the boys slept in a nearby shed. In about 1969, Boyd & Ricki lived in the home after they were married, and while they were on their honeymoon, the house was flooded.

Statement of Significance

Water supply for the area.

Physical Description

Rock catchment area.

History

In December 1924, as part of the water resource planning in the area, De-eranning was set aside for a catchment area and resumed from G W Maddock with no compensation. The water authorities proposed to charge the local farmers, and had them sign an undertaking before construction began on the water catchment. It was completed on 4 March 1926, and a sign warned that non subscribers could not obtain water and as trespassers, would be prosecuted. It was opened on 26 June 1926. The rating system was cancelled in 1931 when depression circumstances meant that even the subscribers could not pay. In 1938, the tank ran empty, and again in 1954 and 1958.

Statement of Significance

The flower pots are a significant reminder of the Italian POW workers in the Mukinbudin area in the 1940s. The place has associations with Bonnie Rock shop.

Physical Description

Cone shaped concrete flower pots.

History

After the railway reached Bonnie Rock in 1931, the settlement established. In the late 1930s Mr & Mrs Alby Smith built a shop and attached dwelling in Bonnie Rock. However, by 1943 it was sold and relocated to the Miell farm, where it was re-constructed by Oscar Miell and Alf Butler, rebuilding it into a four bedroom house with a surrounding verandah. During World War Two a number of farmers in the Mukinbudin area had Italian POWs allocated to assist with the work on their farms. Oscar Miell was one of those farmers. The POW wanted to make flower pots for the 'Mrs'. He dug cone shaped holes in the ground to form moulds for the concrete pots which are about one metre high. They were too large to be moved from their original location.

Statement of Significance

The place is significant in indicating a way of community rural cooperative way of life associated with their occupation on the land. It has associations with farmers who used it.

Physical Description

Concrete construction of the dip with timber railing and fences.

History

Due to poor seasons, poor commodity prices, and the war, marginal area farmers were helped with Rural Reconstruction Funds. In 1945, the community sheep dip was built at Kalkalling with those funds. Lice free wool was economically very important to the struggling farmers in the Mukinbudin area. The first mob of sheep to be dipped belonged to Jim Mondy's father. Only about 50 sheep had gone through when a wether caught its horns on the chained plug and the arsenic solution drained into the drainage well. Young Syd Maddock dived into the arsenic solution and replaced the plug.

Statement of Significance

The place is significant as a source of sustaining settlement in the area.

Physical Description

18 acre rock catchment area a over natural rock formations. Round concrete water storage tank with a corrugated iron roof. Together they have a capacity of 2.25 million gallons.

History

After the Bonnie Rock water catchment was completed in 1931 when the railway came to Bonnie Rock, it was estimated that only 250,000 gallons of the 6000,000 gallon capacity would be available for settlers (the remainder for the trains). Water in Berringbooding was carted form two wells near the rock, which had been cleaned out and equipped with pumps in 1929 as part of the 3500 Farms Scheme. In 1931, the district engineer noted the site as an excellent catchment area. Final surveys were conducted in 1936, and the tank and catchment walls were constructed by sustenance labour during the depression which was still evident in 1937. It was built to provide water for the settlers as the Bonnie Rock catchment catered more for the railway. By 1947, there were very few settlers left to use the water, and the tank was overflowing. Monty Masefield piped the water one mile to the Rabbit Proof Fence, and in 1951 two local farmers reticulated their water supplies form the water tank Until the 1980s, it was the largest concrete water tank in the southern hemisphere.

Statement of Significance

The site and place have associations with the development of health services in Mukinbudin.

Physical Description

Weatherboard & iron. Three bedroom dwelling, with office and carport. Existing building; Brick and tile.

History

There were no medical facilities in the area until Dr Sam Finklestein commenced practice in Trayning in 1923, and then moved to Kununoppin when the hospital opened in 1925. In 1936, the Mukinbudin CWA inquired regarding establishing a bush nursing post in Mukinbudin. The Bush Nursing Society was formed in 1920, and following the establishment of the Muriel Chase Hostel in Kununoppin, and subsequent to the CWA request, the Mukinbudin Bush Nursing Post was opened in 1938. It was mandatory that a local branch raise funds to administer the parent body which had affiliations with the Red Cross and Silver Chain League. In 1936, a public meeting of 50 people was convened by the Mukinbudin Road Board at the request of the Wilgoyne and Mukinbudin branches of the CWA to consider establishing the nursing post, and a committee was formed. The chief fundraising was to be an annual subscription, and a fee for use by non subscribers. The Lands Department allocated a lot on request After a number of meetings throughout the Mukinbudin Road Board district, and with support, the Bush Nursing Society were asked to build the nursing post. The Roads Board offered the use of the vehicle for monthly visits to Wailki and Bonnie Rock. The CWA held a Coronation Ball for fundraising, and fundraising gathered momentum with sports meetings, dances, a fancy dress football match, and donations. Paddy Connolly, the hotel owner was very generous with donations, and subsequently became the Patron of Mukinbudin Bush Nursing Post. The construction of the cottage progressed and was ready for opening on 20 November 1937, but with no nurse, the opening was delayed until April 1938 when Sister Needham took up the position. The official opening took place on 2 July 1938, with dignitaries present. The cottage was called Jane Alexander Hostel after a senior member of the Bush Nursing committee in Perth. The doctor used the nursing post rooms when visiting town. In 1939, Sister Willox of Moondon took up the nurse position. Through the 1940s and 1950s use of the scheme increased. Sister Willox resigned in 1952, and a number of nurses have filled the post since then. By 1963, the premises were no longer adequate, and it was decided to build a new facility. It was funded by the Medical Department and opened in September 1964. In 1975, with the introduction of Medibank, the Nursing centre was classified a hospital, 'Mukinbudin Hospital' and run by the Medical Department.

Statement of Significance

The place represents the co-operative efforts of the Catholic community in Mukinbudin It has a 'sense of place' for the events and ceremonies that have taken place.

Physical Description

Constructed of bricks, with a matching perimeter brick wall, typical gothic style church with a gable roof.

History

The catholic presence in Mukinbudin dates back to Jimmy O'Toole in 1910. By the time the Mukinbudin Hall was built in 1923, there were 20 Catholics attending mass by Father O'Malley in the hall, four times a year (from Goomalling by train). Services continued in the hall until 1939, when the CWA rooms were used, until the Junior Farmers' hall was built in 1954, and mass was held there. The block for the church was donated by E. J. (Snowy) Erickson. In 1954, it was decided to start building the church. The bricks were made on the site, at busy bees, by members of the local community, and the Priest at the time, Father Placid. Morning teas were supplied by Mrs Erickson and the town Catholics. Sand was carted from Fagan's Creek, by shovelling on and off trucks during busy bees in which many members of the Catholic community worked. The church opened on 13 November 1955, by Lord Abbot Gomez OSB of New Norcia. Services were held monthly in the church, and Mr & Mrs Erickson's home opposite the church was welcome to the visiting priests.

Statement of Significance

The place has significant associations with the CWA, women, and the general community of the Mukinbudin area since the 1930s, and more recently the younger generation in town. The place is significant as a representative of the CWA and all that it meant to rural women.

Physical Description

The building is timber framed and clad with flat sheets of asbestos. The main area of 24 square feet comprises a kitchen and meeting room with a front verandah.

History

1929, the Mukinbudin branch of the CWA held their inaugural meeting in the 'Commercial room' of the Mukinbudin Hotel. One of the first objectives was to provide rooms at 'the siding' for farming women to make a cuppa, rest, care for the children, or socialise, as Mrs Stubbs had previously provided in her home. As early as 1930, the CWA catered afternoon tea for the Governor's visit to Mukinbudin, and began the tradition of organising the annual Christmas Tree in Mukinbudin. They ran homemaking classes, catered, gave send offs, assisted families in need, sent children on holidays, and many other community spirited projects. Their rest room was constructed c1938 at a cost of £2300. The Mukinbudin CWA was instrumental in the establishment of the Bush Nursing Post in Mukinbudin. During the war years, the VDC spotting post was the CWA kitchen, where the 24 hour a day post was maintained. The outlying branches of the CWA; Wilgoyne, Lake Brown, Karloning and Bonnie Rock had all amalgamated with the Mukinbudin branch by 1941 The CWA was used by almost all community organisations including regular services by the Catholic, Anglican and Church of Christ churches.

Statement of Significance

The site and church has significant associations with the Anglican community of Mukinbudin. It has a 'sense of place' for the special events and ceremonies that have taken place.

Physical Description

Cement brick construction with a corrugated iron gable roof. Gothic arched windows.

History

In 1923, the Wyalkatchem Trayning Parish was established under the reverend FM Oliver. He was instrumental in the establishment of numerous Anglican churches throughout his Parish including Mukinbudin. Plans for the church were passed in February 1927, and it was ready for use in May. It was not consecrated, just licensed as a Mission Church. In 1929, Mukinbudin came under the Mission District of Nungarin, with Reverend Courtney who held weekly services at Mukinbudin. On 10 January 1951, the original church on this site was destroyed by a storm. The local people organised donations and fundraising, and the new church was constructed by local labour. It was consecrated by Archbishop Moline on 12 May 1953, and the first service held on 7 June 1953. The stained glass window at the front of the church is a memorial to the late Mrs Winsome Watkins.
