Physical Description

The place is a single storey residence with asbestos cement wall cladding and a cement tile roof. The dwelling comprises three bedrooms, kitchen/dining area, lounge room, bathroom/laundry and water closet. The exterior of the property appears to be in good condition. A small corrugated iron shed is located at the rear of the property. The internal fixtures are mostly original, including the bathroom fittings and horizontal pane windows. Floor coverings include carpet and linoleum and some walls have been wall-papered.

History

The Doubleview Estate was established in the late 1920s and 1930s and initially comprised 1,700 blocks. The name refers to the views to both the Indian Ocean to the west and the Darling Range to the east. It now comprises a much larger area, including areas originally designated as within the suburb of Scarborough. House, 129 Alice Street, Doubleview was constructed in approximately 1954 as part of this second wave of State Housing construction in Stirling following the end of World War Two. The residence appears to have been used for the purpose of social housing since its construction. The place is now vacant.

Statement of Significance

The place represents the provision of rental housing by the State and Commonwealth governments after World War Two; The place is indicative of the standard plan and type of housing constructed by the State Government in the twentieth-century; The place is an example of the second wave of State Housing construction in the City of Stirling following the end of World War Two.

Physical Description

The place is a single storey timber framed residence of cream weatherboard construction with a cement tile roof. Timber steps provide access at the entrance and rear. The exterior of the property appears to be in good condition. The dwelling comprises three bedrooms, combined kitchen and dining area, lounge room, bathroom, laundry and water closet. Some original internal fittings, including timber floor boards, bathroom and kitchen fixtures remain extant.

History

The 2014 Thematic History of Government Housing in Western Australia noted that between 1944 and 1955, 46 single detached residences were constructed within the grid bounded by Newborough, Ravenscar and Herbert Streets and Scarborough Beach Road (south). Houses, 128, 130 and 136 Flamborough Street, Doubleview were constructed in approximately 1954 as part of the second wave of State Housing construction within this area. Aerial imagery dated 1953 shows that although in use, the section of Flamborough Street between Newborough Street and Sackville Terrace, including 128, 130 and 136 Flamborough Street, was not yet paved and there had been minimal construction in the area. The southern portion of Flamborough Street between Sackville Terrace and Mooreland Street comprised a series of completed similar small single-storey houses. By 1965, aerial imagery illustrates substantial residential development along the northern and southern extent of Flamborough Street, and the surrounding street grid between Huntriss Road to the east and Deanmore Road to the west. As of 2015, there has been considerable development along Flamborough Street, including the construction of more modern buildings to replace the original 1950s and 1960s residences.

The place is a single storey timber framed residence of blue weatherboard construction with a cement tile roof. Timber steps provide access to the open porch area at the entrance and to the rear. The exterior of the property appears to be in fair condition. The dwelling comprises two bedrooms, kitchen/dining area, lounge room, bathroom, laundry and water closet.
