Statement of Significance

The trees are a landmark in Guildford and help to define the identity of the town. There are few places in the metropolitan area where sugar gums and flooded gums have been allowed to grow to their natural height.

Physical Description

Line of sugar-gum trees, flooded-gums and a lemon-scented gum, mainly on the northern side of James Street, Guildford, with two sugar-gums on the southern side at the corner with Meadow Street. The sugar gums were originally planted in a continuous line along the northern side of James Street, probably in the late 1890s.

History

The first sugar gums to be planted as street trees in Guildford were planted in 1874 by the Guildford Municipal Council. Over the next fifty years or so, the Council continued to plant sugar gums in the streets and in Stirling Square, making them a notable characteristic of the town. Apart from occasional lopping, the line was allowed to grow to its natural height. After World War II various parts of the original line were removed at various times, breaking it into groups.

Statement of Significance

The place is a substantial building demonstrating the continual evolution of the site since c.1830. The place has a considerable historic value as the first hotel in Guildford.

Physical Description

Original mud brick structure built c.1830. Present brick building c.1850. The house is a two storey building of Georgian design and triple flemish bond brick construction with a symmetrical floor plan - bricks hand made, floor boards all hand sawn. The house was originally built with a shingled roof that currently remains intact, however a corrugated roof has since been installed over the original roof. Extensive renovations were made in 1916 at which time rough cast was applied to brickwork, a new staircase was installed and verandahs added on two sides by builder Clarke. Restoration works were later made including granite paving around the verandah, and the brickwork around the swimming pool which was replaced with marble tile.

History

First hotel in Guildford. The building has been used as an inn, a residence and as a school house. Mr Devenish used to brew his own beers on site. A well at the rear of No. 4 James Street was originally owned by the Devenish Inn and used for brewing beer. Quarterly meetings of the WA Agricultural Society were held for several years in a room built for that purpose. An annual fair was held on the adjacent allotment 34 (1840-60), the precursor to the Royal Agricultural Show. Mr Bennett had a school here that formed the embryo of Guildford Grammar. The school had both older girls and infants. Mr Bennett had two daughters Enid and Madge who became Hollywood film stars. His son, Reginald, was killed in World War I. Mr Bennett became Head Master of Guildford Grammar. Miss Bailey's school was also conducted for a while at Devenish Inn.

Statement of Significance

Construction of 'Stirling Arms' coincided with establishment of convict depot at Guildford. Depot gave an immediate boost to the fledgling town's economy. Building also forms part of remnant building stock which make up the historic town's fabric.

Physical Description

The Stirling Arms Hotel is a two storey rendered brick and iron building originally a neo-Georgian building built in 1852. The hotel has been extensively altered and extended. The main facade forms part of the original hotel, together with a one storey section which may have been part of the staff quarters. Renovations were carried out in the 1930s and bottle shop additions in 1960s. The early timber verandah around three sides with crossed balustrades was completely removed and a different type of verandah was replaced on one side. A cellar is located below the hotel.

History

John Welbourne applied for the freehold land in 1851. The front part of the existing hotel was probably built around this time. Welbourne was known as a carpenter, policeman, gaoler, a 'jack of all trades'. The hotel is believed to have been built with the assistance of 'ticket-of-leave-labour'.

Statement of Significance

The first picture theatre built in Perth after WWI.

Physical Description

A large building originally known as the Regent Theatre built 1926 for George Hall. Facade has original pediment shape, rendered relief and decorative stucco detailing. The original ticket box appears to be intact.

History

Regents Theatre was commissioned by George Hall esq as a low budget operation during a time of relative economic hardship. The building was the only cinema operating along Great Eastern Highway as far as Midland Junction with the exception of the Rivervale Picture Theatre. The theatre had been positioned along a bus route and busy thoroughfare of Guildford's main street. The Regent was used by people in surrounding districts as far as Belmont and was used as a hall and picture theatre by the local community. Of interest, during session intervals a messenger would cycle between the Bassendean and Regent Theatres and exchange film spools.

Statement of Significance

The buildings form part of the remnant building stock which make up the historic town's fabric. The building is also a component of the historic commercial centre along James Street. The place has associations with Grace Brockman (nee. Bussell), a prominent historic figure in the state.

Physical Description

A single-storey brick and iron house built c.1860. Features include original Flemish bond brickwork made from local clay bricks. Part of the brickwork has been painted. There are numerous additions including a faceted bay window. There are four different architectural styles in the house representing four stages in extensions. The original home appears to have been a four room structure. The house is located along James Street in the heart of the traditional commercial centre, opposite Stirling Square.

History

Frederick and Grace Brockman moved to this house in about 1876 after living at 'Vernon' in the Swan Valley. Frederick Brockman was the son of Swan Valley pioneer William Brockman. Grace Bussell was historically known for her heroic involvement with the rescue of ship wrecked passengers aboard the 'Georgette'. Grace and her servant, Sam Isaacs, rode backwards and forwards through the surf bringing passengers from the wreck. Grace was later awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society. Frederick Brockman heard of her bravery and rode 170 miles to Margaret River, where he fell in love with her. They were later to have seven children all with distinguished careers. One daughter, Deborah married Sir John W. Hackett proprietor of the 'Western Australian'. Frederick Brockman became Surveyor-General of WA and died in 1917.

Statement of Significance

The building is a fine example of Federation Free Classical architecture, demonstrating the prosperity and development of the Guildford area at the turn-of-the-century; The building occupies a strategic position at the intersection of James and Johnson Streets, making a major contribution to the streetscape and providing a prominent landmark in the Guildford area; and For more than a century the hotel has been an important focus of social activity of the Guildford community, a role it continues to play.

Physical Description

The Guildford Hotel is a two storey building constructed of load bearing bricks and stucco ornamentation in the Italianate Renaissance style or Federation Free Classical style. The eight sided tower belvedere (or cupola) mounted on the building's north eastern corner accentuates the landmark quality of the hotel. The first hotel on-site was built in 1885-86. A two storey extension to the north and south east wing was added in 1899 and extensive remodelling of the façade occurred in 1915. The building was restored to its former glory in the 1990s. In 2008, the first floor of the Guildford Hotel was substantially destroyed by the fire, and was partly restored in 2016. The roof and portions of the first floor were left open to interpret the fire and expose floor structure. The external alterations included a new two storey retail fronting onto Johnston Street comprising vertical steel cladding and render with vertical fenestration to ground level, a new two storey retail fronting onto Johnston Street, access via south elevation to ground floor tenancy, access from Johnston Street to access new commercial tenancy, and a transformer at north west corner of site located fronting onto James Street. Alterations to the ground floor included accessible corridor from Johnston Street with stairs leading to first floor of new building, a new commercial tenancy, a new transformer located onto James Street, new stairs and dual access lift well. The first floor has now been altered and retains evidence of the fire which leaves areas of missing floor and open double height void spaces. Additional works include the removal of paint to reveal selected areas of brickwork and the reinstatement of decorative detail to the Johnson Street verandah, and a new commercial tenancy, new water closets and incorporated office, bar and function room. The roof form now incorporates an operable roof over the front section of the Hotel, which largely aligns with the 1914/15 Hotel additions and runs parallel to James Street. Alterations to the western elevation to facilitate increased access to and integration with the outdoor beer garden. The original belvedere has been replicated.

History

A 'gold boom period' Hotel originally, which was added to in 1915 by Mr G Hiscox who added the Italian Renaissance style additions and original eight sided belvedere which has since been reconstructed. In 2008, a catastrophic fire damaged the hotel, and remained closed until 2016 following a substantial restoration and refurbishment of the building.

Physical Description

The former Vaudeville Theatre was built from corrugated iron and timber c.1896. The theatre is now used as a commercial premises.

History

Gilbert & Sullivan productions and Negro minstrel shows were held in the early 20th century. The Hiscox's organised many balls in the theatre hall. The King's of 61 Helena Street were instrumental in setting up the picture theatre. Wilson's Picture Theatre ran silent movies with Mrs C. Gillon and later Pladey Headry on the piano. The open air picture theatre was on the west side of the hall. After the construction of the St Matthew's Church Hall, the Vaudeville Theatre was still used for many functions because of its size and floor. Following the outbreak of WWI it was used for many fund raising activities. The Ugly Men's Association ran an unusual music eisteddfod. Funds raised were used to assist widows and children of soldiers.
