Statement of Significance

Yanchep Lagoon and Fisherman's Hollow are of historic significance for associations with Mary Lindsay, original owner of the Yanchep Estate who settled in the area in 1926 and who was actively involved in protecting the natural environment and assisting the fishing community in the area. Yanchep Lagoon has social significance for associations with the fishing and crayfishing industries intil the 1970s and for its use for continued use for recreational pursuits. Yanchep Lagoon is of aesthetic significance as an example of the natural coastal landscape of Wanneroo.

Physical Description

Yanchep Lagoon iis located at Reserve 12439 Yanchep, and is within the City of Wanneroo's North Ward. The lagoon comprises an area of coast parallel to Brazier Road with Fisherman's Hollow located nearby on the eastern side of Brazier Road. Yanchep Lagoon is a natural beach site comprising a portion of Yanchep Beach and is approached from the east via Brazier Road. A protected lagoon is formed within the curve of the coastline and there is a reef enclosing a calm swimming spot. There is painted timber signage 'Yanchep Lagoon' with safety warnings and regulations situated at the road level just north of the access to the beach.

History

Although used prior to European occupation by Aboriginal people as a swimming and fishing hole, Fisherman's Hollow together with Yanchep Lagoon have been frequented by holiday makers and fishermen since the early 1900s.The Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association noted in the 'Wanneroo Times (North Coastal) July 30, 2003 , 'Aboriginal elder Cedric Jacobs says there is no doubt that the lagoon would had been used as a swimming and fishing hole and for foraging on the reef for centuries.'...' The lagoon became an anchorage for the crayfishing fleet in the late 1950s and 1960s before the Two Rocks Marina was built.' ..." Twelve drownings due to rip over past 40 years.'... 'Lagoon has now begun to silt up'. In 1926 Mary Lindsay purchased approximately 23,000 acres of land along the coast in the approximate location of Two Rocks. This became known as Yanchep Estate. Mrs Lindsay built a hostel and a store for campers and fishermen (not extant) which supplied water, food and fishing tackle. During the 1950s and 60s the area was frequented by crayfishermen who anchored their boats in the Yanchep Lagoon until the Two Rocks Marina opened and they relocated there. Alan Bond purchased 1,800 acres of land at Yanchep in 1971 with the intention of developing Yanchep Sun City as a residential and tourism development. Development began in close proximity to Fisherman's Hollow and Yanchep Lagoon with the first subdivision being released near the lagoon beach and kiosk. The Two Rocks Marina and Two Rocks Tavern were completed by 1974. These were developed as a base for the America's Cup Challenge. Fisherman's Hollow and Yanchep Lagoon are vested in the City of Wanneroo. Although boats now anchor at the nearby marina the area is still (2005) used as a popular picnic and swimming place by locals and tourists.

Statement of Significance

The Stock Route is highly significant to the cultural heritage of the Shire of Gingin and the State of W.A. in that is was the major thoroughfare for travellers and drovers to the northern districts before the Midland Railway was completed. It is especially significant to the Neergabby precinct as it passed over the Old Junction Bridge and provided the majority of the patronage for the Junction Hotel, adding to the social and economic vibrancy of the area.

Physical Description

The North West Stock Route (fmr) comprises the site of the former road which is within the boundaries of the City of Wanneroo. The entire stock route site extends from Wanneroo through to Walkaway. The Stock Route runs from Walkaway in the Shire of Greenough to Star Swamp at North Beach in the metropolitan area. Stockyards were built and wells sunk along the route for use by drovers and their travelling livestock.

History

One of the earliest and one of the most important Stock Routes in Western Australia, being the one that linked the metropolitan area with the Champion Bay district. For 44 years, from 1850 unitil the Midland Railway was completed in 1894, it was the route by which many thousands of sheep and cattle were driven north to stock the new wool growing and breeding stations, and southward to provide meat for the Metropolis. Hundreds of horses travelled it either carrying people or packs, drawing carts or buggies, or just being driven loose to the fields of their new labours. In its later years, great numbers of camels were taken along it to cart water for the Murchison Goldfields and of course all these animals had people to drive them and guide them, find water and feed for them and protect them from the poison plants along the way.

Statement of Significance

Yanchep War Memorial has historical and social significance as a structure commemorating the contribution of servicemen and women from the Wanneroo district in World War I, World War II, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam.

Physical Description

During the 1930s Yanchep Inn was constructed as part of a group of buildings for use as a resort complex. The inn was leased from 1973 - 1992 to John Hearn. During this time the Yanchep War Memorial was erected (City of Wanneroo) The Yanchep/Two Rocks Sub-Branch of the RSL was formed in the 1977 and began with services in Two Rocks until the Yanchep War Memorial was constructed in 1979. The memorial was built by the members of the Sub-Branch using donated materials and under the supervision of committee member Mr L. Neave. The memorial was located in the then Memorial Garden of the Yanchep National Park. The War Graves Commission donated a large bronze memorial plaque depicting all the badges/emblems of the services. This plaque was later stolen. With the assistance of a Grant from the City of Wanneroo Bicentennial Trust Fund, a new memorial plaque was designed and installed on the Memorial. The Memorial was re-dedicated on Anzac Day 2001. (Two Rocks/Yanchep Sub Branch RSL)

History

Yanchep War Memorial is located to the east and front of Yanchep Inn within Yanchep National Park. The memorial which faces the inn is approached via a brick path which also continues as a circular path surrounding the rock garden at the rear of the memorial. The memorial is constructed from stone and has a brass plaque with a crucifix above. An Australian flag and pole are sited on the north side of the memorial. The plaque on the memorial reads; "in memory of those servicemen and women who passed this way and paid the supreme sacrifice in the First and Second World Wars Korea - Malaya - Vietnam. Lest We Forget."

The clubhouse is a single storey timber framed rectangular building clad with flat sheet asbestos to the top section and metal sheet cladding below. The gabled roof is clad with corrugated asbestos and there is a skillion verandah roof supported by round metal columns. 'Yanchep Golf Club established 1965' appears above the verandah on the west side. There is a lean to on the south side with a cgi skillion roof and recent brick paving to the rear and east side of the building. The building is set among established trees and shrubs and there is a Tree Memorial to life member F*AE D Gibbs 1967-1997 on the north side of the building. Members of the club relocated the building to its current location. Local Cray fisherman Hob Hoy founded the Yanchep Golf Club in 1965.
